Well, microwaves, like light, are just electromagnetic radiation. They just have a longer wavelength, so in theory, I expect it'll be possible to do it at other frequencies at some point.

The problem if it did go on the market, of course, would that it wouldn't be able to be used to make things appear or disappear - merely to hide things, as most people would have heard about the invisible cloaks by then!

Non-lethal weapons that use microwave beams would seem to pass through the wearer and would hit the person standing behind.

In the BBC article they say its a sort of special reflective material. They project an image onto it to give the impression of being see through.
