As a newcomer to this lark, I have J.B. Bobo's Modern Coin Magic and am awaiting delivery of an Okito Box, but does anybody have any other recommended resources, online or printed, that might be of help?
The other thing to mention is that I have little spare brass at the moment (oh, the irony) so the cheaper the better ...

Well, I don't own a coin box, but I do own Bobo's. There seems to be more than enough information on coin boxes in Bobo's (the chapter is more than fairly leighnthy). I don't think you would be able to find a more complete guide to coin boxes anywhere else. If I were you, I'd look into the Modern Miser effect from Bobo's. It looks pretty good.
