TV show tomorrow

Postby Jerome the French » Oct 26th, '06, 23:03

I got a small part for a TV show tomorrow.
That's the 1st time...
It's like a dating show (a pilot), and I wanted to know if I can perform anything I want (close up).
I'll basically be showing magic to a couple at a restaurant's table.
I was thinking about paperclip by Jay Sankey... Can I perform that? Or I would be breaching copyrights and stuff?
Any comment would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I dont knowmuch about copywrights. But any trick you perform has been created by someone.

Then again, Cris Angel..didnt he need Wayne Houchins permission for coin in soda can?

Can't help you mate.. Id say email Jay himself and hope he replies

You bought the dvd right?
then you should be able to perform it. I dont see why you couldnt.

Just dont tell the name of the effect or anything like that.
and dont claim it as your own creation.

Not true. Bying the dvd or book does not mean you can perform it. Particularly on TV, look for this on the packaging or on the dvd its self. I would email Jay himself just to be sure.

Buying a DVD, book or manuscript that details how to do a particular trick generally gives you the performing rights for that trick to an audience but sometimes with the exception of a performance that is being recorded for broadcast.

Many effects have written in the small print where it is specifically forbidden the broadcast or record the trick without having separate permission from the owner of the rights, who is not necessarily the creator.

Check the small print on the DVD or packaging. If there's nothing excluding you from performing on TV then in my opinion I think that you could safely assume, having bought it that you could perform it.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Yes. I don't think you would be able to broadcast this without permision. But Jay Sankey seems to be a pretty nice guy, so I'd look into e-mailing him.

Well, this is all over now, so instead of paperclip, I did an impromptu / improvised folded-signed card to wallet.
Got great reactions. Hopefully it'll show on the program, aired next March / April on Channel 4.
It was for an "Apprentice"-type show.

Was scary, but fun... Hope I'll get contacted again by Channel 4... I dropped loads of business cards...

:D
