Hi Paul and welcome!

There are several threads on ways to start but they're all subjective and things will vary depending on what kind of magic you fancy doing. If you're into cards then stand by for lots of advice about getting the Royal Road to Card Magic book, the Born to Perform DVD and several others. If you're into coins then Bobo's Modern Coin Magic is an excellent book to acquire and, like Royal Road, not expensive either. In general terms, Mark Wilson's Books of magic are always worth considering as are things like Nic Einhorn's Encyclopaedia of Magic which if you can find a copy, gives an excellent range of different magic effects. All of these suggestions are mentioned in depth on many pages at TM so type the words into the Search function above and have a darned good delve!

Hmmm... yes and this bug is hard to get rid of :)
Also, in addition to good advice from Mandrake, there is never enough stress on practicing, practicing and practicing.
Welcome to TM.
Best greetings from Iceland!

Gunnar is correct, having caught the bug back in 1975, and having to stop a few times due to life events, I have always been drawn back. It is too much a part of who I am and, like many others, it will probably become a large part of who you are.

Welcome.
