"Do you do that David Blane Trick"

Postby Mark Waddington » Dec 9th, '03, 18:57

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! I hate it when people ask me if i do the tricks that David Blane does, i dont want magicians worldwide to be classed as the same as David Blane (if Blane is on the forum then i love you deeply!!! cringe!) in my opinion he is not a very good magician from a presentation P.O.V

I hate to say this, but from a presentational point of view I think he is a magnificent magician.

I do wish that you saw everything happening in his TV "street magic" sepcials, but I don't think you can take away from his actual presentation...

As for do I do stuff that Baline does? - well yes I still do ID routines, and some of the other card tricks he has done, but the question you asked seems to imply that they are "Blaines" Tricks. They are not. They are just tricks. tricks that many people do.

ok i'll admit that i do actually like He Who must Not Be Named, not for his "stunts" or his levitation but as an entertainer and as i suppose the person who got me back into magic then yes i would say i like him .... as to do i do his stuff well its not really his stuff if we're going to be pedantic... kings to aces... ambitious card... card through window have all been done MANY times before by other magi so all i'll say is that he and i both do versions of OTHER folks stuff... hehe

I am afraid I have to agree, I think he's a star.
Mainly for his understanding of our times, our media and or concentration levels. He is MTV magic in my opinion and how well that has served him.
When was the last time a magician got on GMTV, lol.

I don't think he is that gifted in the magic department but he presents it well.
By well I mean in exactly the way his american street audience would love (and us obviously), hes an understander as well as an average magician.
I'm a fan and yes I do his stuff, people want to see it, besides if I didn't I couldn't do the AC routine and I spent farrrrrr to long practicing it.

ps- I have to say his box/ice/ooooo I could die stunts bore the pants off me but there you go, so I guess I am going off quite old shows now.

David Blaine:

1: Excellent entertainer, clever businessman, and all-time attention getter
2: Skilled magician, great performer
3: Intelligent talker, creative spirit
4: Natural showman, born to perform (oops... sorry Penguin...)

BUT...

1: Arrogant messiah-type, over inflated ego
2: Reliant almost soley upon shock tactics these days
3: Less of a magician, more of a stuntman/fakir

I must disagree about the 'not much of a magician from a presentational point of view'... His presentations of the effects he does are relatively flawless, and he executes quite difficult moves with almost fluid ease.

However, I don't like the bloke when he pulls his 'I am something special' routine.

But, as said time and time again, he's responsible for a great deal of magic becoming mainstream - which surely is no bad thing.

I also hate it when people compare 'Magicians' with 'David Blaine' - but unfortunately, he IS a magician somewhere beneath his rather ugly stuntman image.

And as I've mentioned before, I have renewed respect for him after reading his book and also seeing how the Box experience has mellowed him slightly.

david blaine:-

magician 50%.
presenter 95%.
mystic -20%.
stuntman 60%.
in need of a character tweek 100%.

sumery:- drop the mystic angle but keep the can i show you something and be a tad more honest with editing and he will go far even with the non mtv generation.
nice guy, i would certainly talk with him on a bus unless he gave me the eye then i'd eat him.

One answer to the original question,
"Do you do that David Blane Trick"
could be: 'No, we have an arrangement, I don't do his and he doesn't do mine.'

If anyone asks me if "I do that trick David Blaine does", I say no, he does that trick that I do. Will now go back to sticking pins into David Blaine voodoo doll. [/i]

The only answer to the question posed has to be...WHO DOESNT?

Quite right, I'm not sure any of us could truly say they have never done anything that Blaine has done. There may be reason when performing for magicians not to do what he does but for our main non-magical audiences seeing something done in the flesh is always better than on TV. So if you are asked to 'do that one Blaine does' do something that they have seen then move onto the stuff you want to be performing, whatever you do they will be impressed as people tend to beleive deep down that anything they see on TV is camera trickery, whatever they think they beleive, so when they see you do something it will be even more impressive.

lol
That is very true, often when asked to do "the Blaine trick" the asker has a gleam in their eye that says they are trying to catch me out.

Though if the want to see the bite out of the coin, they just have :!:
I then have to borrow and lose the coin and keep doing this until they get bored or I have enough for a pint. So it's not all bad.

I think BoyWonder,

you have to separate a good presentation from a presentation we like. DB has a very good presentation, it's just not one that appeals to you.

True happy toad... i accept that you all like him but i dont like the fact that all he does is grunt and say 'watch' when he performs
