Manipulation decks/cards

Postby moodini » Oct 28th, '06, 15:13

I have seen numerous decks on the market, however I was just wondering if anyone knows where to get a set/deck with a bicycle rider back design......I am working on an effect (similar to the one Copperfield did on televesion and MacDonalds $100-4 ace) and I think it would be easiest with manipulation cards......any suggestions?

well i could suggest buy the new masters edition of red backed bicycle cards which have been made by ellusionist. They have the quality of tally ho's which are very nice to handle whilst having the unchanged bicycle back you want. I have not purchased a pack of these, but i hear they are very similar to those of the tally ho quality, which are great for manipulation purposes:D

I was looking at those.....but are they as thin as a manipulation deck? The manipulation decks that I have seen are about 1/3 to 1/2 as thick as a regular deck.......that is ideally what I am looking for.

I have also thought about doing some cards splitting but removing the middle cardboard stock and simply putting the bicycle back on a face without the middle section........stripping the card down so to speak!

In Jeff McBride's 'Card Manipulation' Series he shows how he prepares a deck for his manipulations.

Get a ruler and pin the card under the edge, apply preasure.
Drag the card out.
Repeat with other directions.
repeat with diagonals.

Apply fanning powder.

I am sorry but I am a little confused weather you are going to do some fancy flourishes or a card trick with the cards, because I am not familier with the Copperfield trick or McDonalds Aces, but if it is just XCM flourishes you want to do couldn't you just take out about 6-8 cards from the deck making it thiner over all? and it is never noticed.

I feel that splitting them and taking out the middle would make them very flimsy, thin and when you re-glue them they do tend to get a bit of a ripple effect unless tou could apply even pressure to the whole card whilst they dry. So I doubt you could do a whole deck to the quality you would get from a standard deck.

I probably can not realy help you, but I am curious to have the effect explained to me.

Not for manipulation purposes at all.......it is an effect that when performed will require me to perform a quadruple lift......it is very simple to do if done with four thin manipulation cards, but highly obvious with four regular cards.

I agree with you on the card splitting......it takes some time and patience to get them to look good. That is why I was ultimately wondering about the availability of manipulation cards in bicycle backs....would solve my problem easiliy!

The Bicycle Masters deck is actually thicker than regular cards. What moodini is looking for are manipulation cards which are much thinner than regular cards. They are used for card productions, backpalms and other stuff of that type.

As leighton suggested, cards4magic do have a very nice selection of manipulation decks. They have a poker sized manipulation deck which is 9mm thick. Normal decks are about 16mm thick.

Anyways, quadruple lifts can be executed well under misdirection and a bit of patter.

Without question they can, but I am looking at a subtle routine that when performed (Similar a version Copperfield does) it is completely without patter and is a visual killer.......so misdirection is difficult in the instance I am using.
