Greetings from Greece + questions...

Postby Nightfall » Nov 10th, '06, 15:08

Hello all,

my name is Alex and I live in Greece. I'm 29 years old, recently married, no kids yet just 2 cats  I've been lurking the forum for some days and today I decided to join this great community !

I'm a complete amateur hobbyist . I like to do card tricks (impromptu mostly) such as the "Out of this World" trick which is one of my favourites and I also know a few coin tricks.
I was always into magic tricks but for quite sometime I didn't learn anything knew, recently my interest in magic got refreshed.

The magic scene in Greece is somewhere below zero and zero (and so many are the magic shops here :) ). I followed some of the banners and was amazed by the quantity of magic tricks, books, dvds etc that you can find on line ! What concerns me the most is the quality. If it's not against the rules and based on personal experience what european based e-shops would you recommend ? I really liked the variety of emagictricks.co.uk , do you have any possitive or negative experience ?

I would like to perform for friends ,etc. Mostly close up magic.
Could you recommend something like a starter package consisting of some card tricks , dvd , book and some tricks involving other items ?
I don't know many sleights so far but I've got all the patience in the world (I'm an amateur photographer and angler, trust me I know what patience is  ) .

Thank you all very much for your patience in reading my overlong post and excuse me for the question bombing (and for any typos or mistakes I did). Nice to be here.

Hello Alex and welcome to TM!

emagictricks are an excellent firm as are any of the ones who advertise at the bottom or sides of the pages here. Check them all out and see who's offering the best deal and I'm sure you won't be disappointed in terms of quality and service. Before ordering anything, look through our Review section for observations and comments just in case there are aspects which might mean a particular trick isn't something you'd be OK with. There are one or two threads concerning starter packs or which items might be good to get in the first instance so again a bit of searching would find them. There's a very good chance that the other members will be offering their ideas on that topic as well!

Well knock me down with a feather!!! That was a pretty decent introduction for once!! WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!!

Everyone has their own opinions on who's best but some of the ones who are used most regularly are either advertised at bottom of page and the following...

Penguin
Magic Tricks
Alakazam

to name but a couple!!!

Beware though of the syndrome known as C.U.P.S LOL!!! There's many a sufferer here.... do a search on CUPS for enlightenment on the syndrome!!

Welcome once again!

Hi and welcome to this community. Nice to see a good introduction. Now if you are considering getting some books related to card and coin magic (you mentioned those two), you won't go wrong with "Royal Road To Card Magic" (RRTCM) and Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic". Those two books are often refered to as the bible of card/coin magic. The sleights are very basic but you will need to get them down to proceed to some more difficult sleights. Both of the books are very cheap so don't pay too much for them.
Once again, welcome!

Thank you all for the warm welcome !
As for the CUPS syndrome I already suffer from that in my other hobbies, so I don't think I'll manage to avoid it here  (and I was really happy to see that some e-shops have a fixed shipping rate from a certain amount and above  )

Welcome, and I would second Marcos' book recommendations. You may have noticed that RRTCM, Bobo and 13 Steps to Mentalism are probably the most often recommended books on this site, and for good reason. Also many people have said that if you work through RRTCM you will be far ahead of many magicians.
