Paramiracles by Ted Lesley

Postby Tom Hutley » Sep 14th, '06, 16:16

Paramiracles is a book I have wanted for sometime now, and I feel like buying it.

I have done a search around the forum, found a couple of threads and only found a tad bit of information about the book.

If anyone has it, could they write a some kind of review that goes over the main points of this book.

I want to know how much of the effects are gimmicked, how long it takes and how much to gimmick the stuff. What some of the effects are, are they any good?

Looks like a great read, but I want to know more about it.

Thanks,
Tom

Though it is comprised of what I'd call "Mental Magic" more than "Mentalism" this is probably one of the more important effects books to come out in a very long time (ahead of the popularity curve we see today). I have used a great deal of the material outlined in the book and believe Ted to be one of the more "unknown" heroes of this market. But know that he is a magician and showman first, not a "Mentalist" per ce.

A friend of mine went to see mentalist Gerard Senehi in London and 18 months later she still beleives some of what he did was "real".amongst spoon bending happening in her hands (twist) and reading effects she was most impressed with Senehi seemingly bending wine glasses with his mind..his approach sure brings up ethics disscusion, anyway i think he may have been using the glass bend from Paramiracles & from what i hear this stuff is in 4 -5 range and worth investing the time in.

As someone who is just getting into mentalism I have to agree with Craig. I am a cardician and I enjoyed the book (it is largely responsible for my interest in mentalism) but Craig is correct, it is not what would normally be classified as "Mentalism". I used a number of effects from it at one time or another and I think it is definately worth the purchase price.

Hi Tom.

"I want to know how much of the effects are gimmicked, how long it takes and how much to gimmick the stuff. What some of the effects are, are they any good?"

Lesley goes into detail on the preparing of cards (ways of marking, gimmicking so particular ones always get cut to the top) envelopes (to make things appear, have multiple outs) which only take a minute or two. The glass bending effect requires quite a deal of work and I haven't tried it but it looks good.

I'd say they are good, I don't do a lot of card magic and didn't know how to gimmick cards so that spectators always cut particular ones to the top. I've been having a lot of fun with this.

I'll post a full review in the Reviews forum

I was one of the first people to do the glass here in the states; I've used Ted's method as well as a few other methods that aren't as well known. Too, mine as a special "optional climax" in which the glass will break every now and then as it bends (a little PR bit I added in... please don't copy it in that it is mine and NO ONE has permission to do the break with the bending as I do.)

If you are new to Mentalism I'd highly recommend that you NOT even think about this effect just yet. It requires some strong showmanship skills that the typical novice will not have.
