I don't have this one - yet (!) but it occurs to me that whereas a 'normal' person might need a valid reason for walking around with a plate, a slighly 'odd' entertainer can get away with it as they're expected to do strange things without offering any explanation.

Stories such as, 'I went to one of those cheap resaurants yesterday where The Daily Special was the the cold platter for £3.00. And that's all I got - the cold platter, no #@%&# food at all!' might help explain - or not. (I'm thinking Joe Pasquale here for some reason!).

Now your talking! See, thats all I am looking for, a good excuse why I have the plate. Now I'm starting to warm to the idea.

Mandrake - you should email devin with that suggestion...

The plate question answered

Postby magicbuilder » Dec 16th, '03, 23:09

I was told to come check out the board again. Been so busy filling orders I have little time for anything else.

Someone mentioned why not do this without the plate? Well you do at first.
You take a borrowed deck or use your own, and turn your head and mix the cards around on a table till they say stop (while still looking away) you pickup a card at random and reveal it.

This in itself is strong, but you tell them that some people think perhaps you secretly marked the cards or peeked. SO TO eliminate that you say we'll cover the card so I can't see it.

At this point you say, hmm--lets use this plate, let them examine it and see it's opaque. A card is then freely selected while you look a way and placed under the plate. The person then puts their hand on the plate so you can't secretly sneak the card out. You then reveal the card! Done in this manner the plate causes NO SUSPICION rather it makes the first trick you did REPEATED UNDER test conditions. YOu point out the plate will keep you from seeing the card or peeking at it. EVEN IF THE CARDS had marks on them you couldn't see them. The rest of the cards are removed from sight while you look away so they give you no clues.

To the person it doesn't matter what you cover the card with (you use a plate) as far as they are concerned it could have been a book or briefcase, etc.

Another thing that will be brought in a revision of the manuscript. If doing this under test conditons. You bring out your deck on the plate saying you don't want to touch the deck and have the person pick it up and shuffle while you look away. What could be more logical than having the deck on a plate so you can't touch it and offering to person.

They then select a card with the deck in their hand and it is hidden under the plate so if you had marked the cards you still couldn't read the backs, etc.

I have personally done this trick hundreds of times. It's a KILLER FOR LIVE STAGE SHOWS. This is one card feat that is suitable for stage and to the audience there appears no way (including most magicians and mentalists) as to how you could reveal the name of the card under those conditions.

It's one of those things that people go home wondering if you really have psychic powers. I designed this for STAGE, Television and Newspaper offices. It's hard to top in these conditions. It was never designed for a walk-around trick. That in my opinion would CHEAPEN this miracle. This a special effect when you got to fool a reporter or want to blow away a local TV host. You'd be hard put to find a stronger card effect for a mental stage act.

Thanks for sparing the time to visit - I read the postings on Magic Cafe last night and you've certainly been busy - hope you're making some money as well!

Thanks for the additional information, I can hear all those collective talkmagic brainboxes working away on this one!

Plate

Postby Piers » May 12th, '05, 13:35

I have this Plate trick.
Sorry - just don't like.
I think an audience would spot it if close enough, and if too far away, I don't think they would get much from it.
Sorry !

No need to apologise for giving an honest and respectful opinion - you're not on your own in having issues with this item. Some folks seem to love it but most of the comments we've seen on TM are along the same lines as yours. Sorry Devin!

Devine Plate ( and Box )

Postby Piers » May 12th, '05, 17:07

Thank you.

I think this was one of those occasions when I just got caught up with all the hype. Of course, some you win and some you lose,
and to some extent it’s the nature of the beast. There will always be an element of risk with magic, when for obvious reasons you
cannot always see before you buy….

Interestingly, there’s a lot of excitement about the ‘Glass Box’ by Devine. I wonder what that’s like ? I think this is where such
forums are SO useful, to get other’s comment and informed opinion !

Piers.

I haven't heard anything so far about Glass Box but just hang in there a while and I'm sure someone will post some comments about it sooner or later. As you rightly say, this sort of discussion is very useful to avoid shelling out the hard earned readies on 'inappropriate' items! :D

I was told from a very reliable source that Glass Box was primarily manuscript work although there is minor gimmicking in the box itself. I was told 90% of the work was done via following the manuscript and your own effort.

Plate

Postby Piers » May 13th, '05, 06:37

The way i have used it ( plate ) in the past is to :
Hold the plate flat, as a plate,
place a card face down,
and then to hold the card face down on the plate with my fingers,
and then ..... that's when the magic happens.
Or sort of happens... but again, this 'trick' is not for me......

Personally I chucked the instructions in the bin and used the plates to eat my dinner off of. There are far easier and less ridiculous ways to peek a card.
