As I mentioned in my introduction, I am writing a novel that contains two working magicians, one of whom is a street magician.

Now, I'm rather familiar with the conventions, if not many of the methods, of stage magic. I am, however, entirely unfamiliar with street magic, in its many elements. I have, perhaps foolishly, decided to make one of the magicians a street magician, and I was wondering if you kind folks could share with me a few of the BEST tricks you've seen or heard of a street magician performing.

I have become obsessed with making each of the tricks (with a few exceptions) entirely possible, and so if you post a trick that you believe (or know) requires something special (such as massive preparation, or a camera trick, or for the magician to be wearing a snow jacket with ridiculously thick sleeves), then please share that restriction.

Please note, though, that I'm not asking for any secrets. I don't want anyone to misinterpret this and think I'm a secret junkie, trying to bum my next fix off an unsuspecting poster.

I would recommend the street magic DVD from ellusionist.com. There are 17 or so effects there so you'd have something to work with.

Street magic is basically close up magic but obviously unless you're carrying a table round with you you are going to exclude the close up stuff that requires a table!!

The street magic is a good dvd but there are some oldie goldies out there that still carry weight such as the note change (borrow a fiver from spec, turn it into a tenner b4 turning it back to a fiver). So don't necessarily be led by the newest closeup effects as they're not always the best.

Visual close up is always good with the borrowed and bitten coin a nice little one as is the coin in a bottle scenario.

But there is also a fashion now towards the wilder side of closeup with things like fire balls from anywhere and other extreme effects packing the biggest hit amongst UK people anyway. It's powerful magic!!

Well, you see, that's what I mean. Every couple of days, I see some amazing effect in a youtube video or something. Something I literally didn't think could be done, but you learn something new every day.

Anyway, what is the most unusual street magic stunt you've seen. I'd rather not purchase a DVD from Ellusionist because I'm not looking for the actual secrets of the tricks, and if I were, I would probably chose a different product to purchase with my Reserved-for-Magic money.

go on you tube and type 'david blaine street magic 2/4'. at the end of the video he does a card trick on an American Football team which is just brilliant. its a simple trick to do but it gets them everytime, and looks amazing.
