any leftys out there?

Postby TOJennie » Nov 14th, '06, 01:12

One of the problems I have experienced in my learning process with magic is the fact that I am left handed. All the videos, books, everything is tailored for right handed people. OFten enough, this doesn't make a huge difference but when you are learning something completely new or something like fans or anything that requires intricate movements, it becomes more problematic.

Are there any other leftys out there?

I'm not a lefty but i always learn tricks so that i can do them with both hands. i never have a problem with it because if there is something complicated i just do it first with my right and then mirror it with my left once i have the steps down. i suggest doing the same because it'll help you to become ambidextrous. :D

That's exactly my problem. I always learn tricks for both hands but it's the initial one that is hard. Try learning out of a book by mirroring the instructions before you know the trick, especially when it involves verbal instuctions with the right hand fingers and the left hand palm, etc. Or follow along on a dvd when you can't do exactly what the presenter is doing. It's easy enough when you know exactly how to do it with one hand but not when you are doing it for the first time. And it's usually easier to learn with your dominant hand first.

I have found myself becoming more "right handed" as a magician simply out of necessity. Or I just ignore the books and figure out my own way of doing something, which often works out quite well. (The fact that I have quite small hands doesn't help much). It forces me to improvise. But I guess the fact that I am learning things by trial and error could make me a better magician in the long run.

yeah it probably will. i always, whenever i get the chance, try to figure out how i would go about doing the same effect that i see someone do in a video or something, before i see their way of doing it. It gets the creative juices flowing for a whole bunch of other tricks when the two ways are completely different!

I'm left handed aswell, and I find it not very hard to transfer everything to my left hand.. It might even make it easier for me.. cause Im facing my TV screen. when the DVD is played, and this way its liked mirrored if you know what I mean.

The only thing that annoys me and what I have to work on.. is that I spread through the cards towards the left.. and noticed a little while ago.. that you can only see the bottom right numbers of the cards.. thats perfect when your setting up a trick, since the spectators cant see anything.. but when your in a trick its annoying 8)

I am left handed as well (even though its the only hand i have use of). I find it is an uphill struggle converting everything to left handed styles, but you will learn it both ways, left and right, and that can have great benefit.

The only advice I can give is the same that I use myself. PRACTICE

There's been a previous thread on this topic so a bit of Searching might find the tips and hints offered a while back.

I'm a lefty and usually I just reverse everything except when something will only work if its done right handed. It gets confusing sometimes

Could you not work with a mirror, and rather than look at your hands, look at the mirror reflection.....may be a stupid suggestion, but simply thinking outloud is all!
