Question on Sinful

Postby GooGooDolls » Nov 17th, '06, 21:08

I have performed sinful once to my dentist because he knows I am very well into magic and knows i have wanted to become a magician. So I stroll in there thinking its my day off school one day of leisure time before back into magic. my dentist handed me a coin and said show me a trick. obviously caught off guard i asked him if he had a pop can. He did so I performed sinful. However, my question was when I performed it, it felt kind of awkward and I was wondering is there any pausible way to not make it so awkward or is just keep performing it and then it shouldn't be so awkward.

There should be no need to feel awkward.

What was his reaction to it. I generally get really good responses when they see the coin really is in the can!!

PRACTICE!

That's the only way. As with any magic effect, practice it over and over and over and over and over and over again. The vast majority of the material I perform I have practiced hundreds and hundreds of times.

You practice, you perform, you analyse what worked and what didn't, you rejig it, practice it some more, go out and perform it again - it's a continuous process of refinement  :D.

I agree. Discomfort is simply a sign of a lack of confidence in your handling. Practice until it's second nature. Personally, due to the inane, obsessive amount of years practicing, I'll find myself stacking a deck during my shuffle (with random, unpeeked cards mind you, so there's technically no cheating) in most any casual poker game I'm not paying attention to. Yeah. Practice makes perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect performance.

How does one stack a deck with random unpeeked cards?

Hahah. I guess I wasn't clear. I meant it's not technically a stack, though I went through the motions. I stacked completely arbitrary cards. No special arrangements and no selections. Just whichever cards happened to be in the packet I needed.

Sort of like practicing a DL repeatedly with whichever cards are available on top of the deck.

...was an attempt at humor, but now I explained it. Blast!

I'm not quite sure whether this is your question but...

I'm not quite sure whether you were ready to perform it. If I didn't feel like performing, I won't perform. My friends always ask me but I sometimes am not ready to show a work in progress.

Imagine the value of the effect and how much you would be doing the spec a disservice if you're not ready to perform it.

I gotta agree with this.

If you felt awkward when performing it, you're obviously not ready to show it off in public, so basically keep on practising it 'til you can do it standing on your head, with your eyes shut, whilst humming the national anthem

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

r.e. feeling awkward......
really believe the coin penetrates the can. often referred to as a silent script.
The more you believe the impossible happens and act accordingly, the more your spectators will believe it too.
It's the same as with false transfers, you truely believe a sponge ball is in your hand, so it appears more so to others that it really is.

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

"Fizzy pop" - now there's a piece of generational vernacular I haven't heard in a while! Reminds me of grandmothers saying "I bought some fizzy pop for you and your friends, I know you like it", little knowing that Panda cola and Coca Cola are as different as cadburys and scotbloc.

The main problem is the carbonic acid that corrodes away your enamel

Having said that, I drink at least 2 cans of diet pepsi a day - much, much more now it's deadline season - so I can't talk (or chew, ho ho ho... )

Oh yes, thread subject... ha... erm, yeah, probably just practice more. Having said that, it will always be a nervous experience when you start to perform a new effect. I found it depressing how - when I had perfected my technique and patter for various card tricks - I really struggled to perform still. Eventually I just carried my cards everywhere and practiced shuffles and sleights in public (not so as they could see the sleights, obviously!) - just got used to handling cards in public. Helps, but not sure what to suggest in terms of Sinful... :?:

ive showed that to some of my friends got a great reaction... try to do it faster than useual like you dont need to show people the bottem so much.. because when you show them places on the can it leaves more room for error.

thanks for all the responses i have read them many times however i have not had time to respond back. I have practiced sinful a bunch of times bought a new 12 pack of mountain dew. what a waste I know but I have gotten alot better at it and smoother at it so it does look great. For one of you who asked what the dentist and everyone thought of the effect they were shocked. one of the ladies asked if there was a hole in the can. it turned out good it just felt kind of awkward and now it doesn't because i have practiced more on it. Thanks for all the help.
