Surprised that Jay doesn't seem to care

Postby gunnarkr » Oct 27th, '06, 03:12

The other day I bought a 3 DVD set "Best of Jay Sankey's Magic".
When I received it, it was written on DVD-R, with purple bottom and with a papersticker (like I can print on my ink jet printer at home) on the top.
I wrote a request to Sankey Magic, if I was actually receiving the authentic Sankey Magic DVD I paid for or a rip off? Some DVD-R don't play in normal DVD players and some disks stutter or judder.
This is the reply I got:

I can't say for sure. At one point we DID release a handful of DVD-R
discs (our EX-duplicator had burned some without our knowledge) but I also
know my stuff is being pirated all over the place!

Hmmmmm... I was surprised. He really didn't seem to care at all. I would have expected him to ask where I got it from, so he could check it out?
I heard he's very concerned about the money side of doing business with magic shops, but if somebody was selling ripped DVDs or not, naaaah... he didn't bother about.

Well, at least I got his e-mail address... he he he... :P

What fiasco was that Matthew?
Well, he could check out what Magic Shop was selling DVD-R... and compare to his invoices...

As far as I know this has nothing to do with Penguin magic. Sankey magic have been known to put out these home made looking dvds. And as far as I know Penguin has never been known for pirating dvds. You really shouldn't say such things on an open forum.

no one ever said it did. he said it reminded him of it. and the other guy asked what that was, i sort of explained it. So maybe read before posting. :?

I was refering to Barnabas' post:

Which I felt was pointing towards penguin magic as having done coppied dvd's of his work. Which is not the case. The two issues are quite unrelated.

I would be interested to know where you got the dvd's gunnarkr. It sounds to me that they are legitimate dvds. I believe this issue has been raised previously and this was found to be the case.

Sorry, but you explained absolutely nothing. That Jay left Penguin Magic for "many reasons" and that you have a letter, don't explaing anything at all :?

The other thread is at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic7730-0-asc-0.php and may fill on some of the blanks. In the end Jay Sankey posted a retraction to clear up misunderstadings about his relationship with Penguin.

Thanks Mandrake!
This fills the gap about Jay leaving Penguin, which was actually not the initial topic :) But interesting to know anyway.

I'm glad I never ordered from them. I prefer buying from a physical shop.

Alot of people jumped on the bandwagon claiming that penguin was wrong and bad, but recently other UK shops have started pulling Sankey products as well for the exact same reasons that penguin stated.

Always wait for the full story.

i was talking to gazzo and he was saying that penguin had ripped him off too. basically they did it to most of the celebrated celebs on their site. but have now apparently coughed up the dough that they owe them. still won't do business with them
