Hello from London (England!)

Postby magicofthemind » Nov 29th, '06, 10:13

Hi, my name is Barry.

My experience in magic, which goes back to early childhood, has (so far) been as an amateur. I spend far more time reading and writing about magic than performing. Although I have a weakness for impromptu close-up magic, my main field of interest is mentalism, fuelled by a long-standing study of the paranormal. This began with an undergraduate thesis on telepathy as part of my psychology degree studies. I have recently launched myself into a new career as a hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner, and use some mentalism to liven up talks on hypnotherapy.

In addition to various articles published in The Linking Ring and elsewhere, I have also contributed to Kenton Knepper’s Killer Konceptions, a follow-up to The Original Kolossal Killer. I am an Associate of The Inner Magic Circle and a member of the IBM British Ring.

Look forward to chatting!

Barry

That sounds interesting. Strictly as a psychologist (as opposed to an entertainer), what were the conclusions to your thesis?

Thanks, Mandrake, and Hi, Tomo.

The purpose of the thesis was to find out whether a pair of friends were better at communicating telepathically than strangers. The senders were asked to draw simple pictures and the receivers to reproduce them. The results were not significant statistically, although there were a few remarkable "coincidences" in individual drawings. But the write-up included a long introduction reviewing the history of psychical research generally.

Unfortunately, this was in 1972, well before word processors, and I don't have a copy.

Hello Barry and welcome to TM.
I don't think there are any Clinical Hypnotherapists or Stress Management Trainers in the forum, so I'm sure your thoughts and advice will be well appreciated.
Best greetings from Iceland!

Hello there. How nice it is to be able to mix and match your career and magic. I like that you're doing it both ways.

I'm interested in your conclusions on telepathy.
