Howdy, Y'all

Postby resdog » Dec 1st, '06, 15:56

Hello. I am a magician from Dallas, TX, USA. My specialty lies in card magic/manipulation. I was a working professional in my younger days, but now I rarely perform professionally (I've got 2 kids and a wife to provide for), but I still study and frequently perform magic for strangers, coworkers, friends and family. I started magic in college at 18, with the purchase of some IT and long balloons. After performing the floating balloon dog routine, I expanded and bought the "ETMCM" series by Michael Ammar. After studying each trick, working a routine around them, I love the beauty of card magic, as it allows all the magic to be done in the performer's hands. It's all up to the skill of the magician. It's a very intimate venue.

Well, that's me. This forum looks like fun, and I hope that you UK folk won't mind a Texan amongst y'all!

Howdy, everyone! I really don't have the thick Texas accent anymore. I studied a year of voice and phonetics. I can do a pretty passable Scottish and British accent, though.

Welcome!

I am also new here.

Curiously I got back to magic when I got a child. Having a young child helped me see and appreciate the magic in the world once again!!

But like you I had a break in magic for many years. I performed as a child (app. 10 yr old) but only for family and friends. Then for many years I did not do anything until one day my 3 yr old daughter was watching Paul Daniels on a video I got for her.

He was doing the effect with two tubes on a table. He displayed the tupes as empty, yet shortly after he produced a big can full of rice!

I realised I could do part of the effect for my Daughter so after having made the tubes I showed the two tubes empty, and yet suddently - as from nowhere there was all that toy.

My Daughter looked at me in absolute utterly amasement while she uttered just one word: Hoooow..... As you can hear from her responce, she was already a little scientist so I decided that it would be better for her if I (after having performed the production a number of times) let her in of the mechanics of what was going on! For the next many hours she practiced doing it, and every time she failed I had to go out of the room (so she could do the setup) and pretend I did not see anything suspicious!!! Of course soon she learned to do it, and were ready to amase her mum!

After that experience I came back to the magic of my childhood!!

Magic is slight of mind!

That's great, Soren. I have one son (2) and two nephews (2 & 8), and they are really interested in magic. My two year old son and nephew are both learning how to do a table spread and deal the cards. They do remarkably well with a regular sized deck. They are getting miniature cards for Christmas to help them out.

It's great seeing these "little people" eyes pop open in wonder when I do a card fan or snap change. They are very attentive when I'm teaching them, and I can't wait to see how they turn out.
