Howdy folks,
I've been a casual fan of magic for a while. Always liked thinking through tricks trying to see how they were done or thinking of ways they could have been done. REcently when watching through Penn and Teller's Bullsh*t the occasional trick placed into the show rekindled my interest in magic, specifically sleight of hand. When I was a kid I had a few books with basic tricks, and props to perform them.
One of the most impressive tricks in my mind was maing something like a card appear in an empty hand, after watching such a trick 12+ times I figured out a way to do it and practicsed it till I could do it well enough, still can't make it disapear too well though. I'm interested in sleight of hand most of all, as I percieve them to be most impressive and require nothing beyond talent and practice. I have little interest in prop-magic, not sure of correct terminology, but by that I mean tricks which require use of a not so ordinary item.
Perhaps my interest in sleight of hand primarily comes from my love of strange and unusaly abilities such as lockpicking, things that take hours of practice and show great skill I'm impressed by over cheap tricks bought of the net and easily performed with a little practice, though as I've not bought tricks of the net I may be entirly wrong in assuming many are easy to perform with little practice.
Now for the question, anyone have recomendations for dvds, or books ect, preferably books about sleight of hand? Hows Now You See It, Now You Don'T: Lessons in Sleight of Hand by Bill Tarr measure up?
Any magicians I should check out?
I do like stage magic as thats always a great excercise in how figuring out how a trick is done, and m love of well developed skill means I'd like good sleight tricks. Probably going to get a Penn and teller Dvd as I did enjoy them on Bullsh*t.
