Newbie here: Hummer Floating Card Trick question

Postby dizzydog » Dec 8th, '06, 23:41

Cheers from Arizona gang!

Been doing magic for about a week now! Got the bug after watching some videos on Youtube.

So I just picked up the Hummer floaing card trick off of Ebay.

Is there a trick you guys use to attatch the string to the card with the wax that is fast and effective?

Its literally taking me like 10 mins to do this part and I know some guys can easily swap the wax and use someone from the audiences credti card etc but cant for the life of me figure out how to do this so quickly!

I keep losing the thread!

Almost any online magic dealer will have it for sale. Depending on where you typically shop, what country you're in, and who you like to do business with.

Also, almost any bookstore should be able to help you out. More likely than not you'll have to stop by the customer service desk and special order it in - this isn't one that's usually on the shelves from my experience.

Whatever you're using to attach it (and if it's a knock-off from eBay, it might well have come with old bogies or something), use something else. It sometimes comes off mid-flight - esp. if you're still learning to do it and are a bit heavy-handed - but I've never known it be that much bother to attach in the first place: certainly not anywhere near 10 minutes bothersome.

And sorry if the forum seems snappy: you've turned up at an unfortunate time. We've had a rash of 'I'm bone idle, and don't really care about magic anyway, just tell me all the secrets NOW' new posters arrive recently. Our poor nerves are frayed.

Welcome dizzy dog. Bear with us all as Sexton has mentioned..... but don't let that put you off staying. You are most welcome here if you truly want to learn just remember there are no secrets to be gained here, only discussion regarding items we own, perform, admire etc....

In answer to your question re wax... you use your thumbnail, push it on, pick it off.... make sure the IT is well secured in wax. And make sure your length is the same length as your arm.

Also, regarding IT, I picked up a great tip just the other day. I've got some IT that's really strong - wonderful, you're think, as breakage is IT's bane. However, Very Thin + Very Strong = Cuts Through Wax Like Cheese Cutter Throught Cheese. So, essentially, you end up with a perfect illustration of the old magician's adage: never repeat a trick's failure unless you can achieve the same failure by a different method.

Anyway, I bought a couple of things from MagicTricks.co.uk a week or so ago, and they have an offer at the moment where you get a free ITR with orders over £20 or something. I didn't actually want an ITR, but was gracious enough to accept one for free nonetheless. It's actually not a bad one, and comes with a rather good little booklet (you'd expect it alone in a jiffy bag, being a free gift, wouldn't you?). One of the things the booklet suggested was rolling a little cotton or similar into the wax, to prevent the 'cheese cutter' problem. Like putting straw in bricks, I suppose.

I will use this tip in something else, not at all like the Hummer, as it's just what it needs. Though, I can't say what is is, as it'd be too near exposure. I know that's not much help to anyone, but I'm happier for it and, I sure you'll agree, that's the main thing.

Maybe im spinning too hard, the card went flying right off the string last night when i tried in front of a small audience.

That sucked. Went into the bathroom and got "ready" againa nd came back out with more wax on the card and it workeed a bit better.
