Name that trick...

Postby Special-K » Jan 3rd, '04, 04:42

I saw this performed on Astounding Celebrities this week. I'm sure I saw the same trick for sale on the Internet but now I cant find the website.
Can anyone tell me what this trick is called and where I can get it?

Magician shows spectator top two cards of a deck, Ace of Hearts, Ace of Diamonds in this case. Magician dicards the rest oif the pack. He turns the cards face down hands one to spectator and asks him to check the card and hold it face down. It's the Ace of Diamonds. Magician then makes a motion as if to switch the spectator's card with the magician's but the spectator is adamant no switch took place. Spectator checks the card again. Now it's turned into the Ace of Hearts! Turn both cards face down magician performs the same action. Spectator is now convinced he is holding Ace of Hearts. When he checks it's turned back to the Ace of Diamonds again. Finally magician hands both cards to spectator and asks him what cards he thinks he has. Spectator replies Ace of Hearts, Ace of Diamonds. When spectator turns cards over he is holding a completely different pair of cards in this case Seven of Clubs, Seven of Spades.

I thought this trick was called Paired Off or Paired Up but I may be mistaken cos I cant find it. Does this trick sound familiar to anyone?

This trick is pure slight-of-hand. There is nothing to buy other than a deck of cards, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I think I heard someone call it the "two-card monte".

Yes, what you are describing sounds like the 2 card monte,

Im not sure you may be able to find a mechanical version, but really it is sleight of hand, and even I can do it!

Yup, sounds a lot like 2 card monte but perhaps with an extra stage thrown in, are you sure about the exact order of what happened?

"2 Card Monte" is in fact, "Be Honest, What is It?" by Eddie Fechter.
You`ll find it in "Fechter", by Jerry Mentzer.
The handling was changed slightly by Blaine (if indeed it was he who changed the handling), but is essentially the same trick.

You can get a good variation of 2 card monte in Born to Perform Card Magic.
