Hi, I came across this website and since I'm a relatively new magician, I figured I could learn a lot here. My name is Andrew, and like I said I am a relatively new magician, I can perform the "World's best card trick", the 3 rows of 7 trick, and simple tricks like the riffle card trick.

Welcome! The trick you mensioned is very very far from being the "worlds best magic trick". Infact its a rather poor one. As I wrote elsewhere:

Soren Riis wrote:Nice famous mathematical trick. In my mind it has the apperence of being a magic trick, but it is really just a puzzle. By asking which pile the card is in three times clearly one get quite a lot of information. As a magic trick it is a rather poor one....

Usually the trick is done with three rows each containing 7 cards, however it work as well if the three rows contain 8 or 9 cards. When picking up the piles the row selected by the spectator is sandwiched between the two other rows of cards. Please notice that one can collect these cards in a rather sloppy way since only the order of the cards being sandwiched matters. With this type of handeling combined with repeated magician force to let the spectator mentally find their own card in the end I think we have a decent effect that might impress friends and family :D

If people want you to teach them a magic trick this is a good one to teach, since the method is more magical than the trick itself. Also the method does not expose any serious magical secrets.

Anyway enjoy your stay.

Hello Andrew and welcome to TM.
A trick is always good if it works.
If you bend a finger and show you only have 4 and a 1/2 finger on one hand... and if you sell the trick as magical, you have succeeded. (Gulp! I hope I didn't expose anything here  )
So if you are good at something and it works, by all means use it and astonish your audience!
I saw a man the other day, that makes a living on doing a coin trick with only one move and one move only. He's very very good at it, but this is something he has specialiced in, and it keeps him in business.
In other words, what is good or bad is relative. :)
I hope you will enjoy your stay in the forums.
Best greetings from Iceland!

Yes, you are right one should never be too categorical and dogmatic in magic. Maybe, I was a bit arrogant and dismissive of the 3 x 7 trick.

A nice way to see how it works is to collect the piles so cards that are ruled down are turned face down. This way one can see how each choice nicely have fewer and fewer cards faceup. After two rounds most often 2 cards are face up, though a third of the time three cards are turned face up. Try this!! You can also try it with the piles arranged 3 x 8 or 3 x 9.

The maths behind it is quite neat.....

On http://www.dcs.qmul.ac.uk/newsletter/cs4fnissue2.pdf there is an article for computer scientists about card shuffleling and computer memory. It is my hand that is doing the perfect faro. It was colleguage of mine who wrote the article.

Please ask if you have any questions!

Erms, there was a comma between the "world's best card trick" and the 3 x 7 thing. The word's best card trick is also known as Red Hot Mamma, which is not a porr trick.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :)

Gunnarkr, I'm 15 and I live in Michigan.

I've just now figured out, after watching a video about 13242342 times, the general idea of Jumping Gemini. Hopefully I'll be able to get some tips on how to get a smooth action on it.

Obviously the "world's best card trick" is definetly not the world's best card trick, it's all in the eye of the beholder, there is no world's best card trick.
