no question technique is the most important issue when using a TT. and although i hv experimented with various types, fact is... when used properly the Vernet is as "invisible" as any.

i also agree with earlier comments that having a few in different sizes, or loaded with foil or a magnet is also a good idea. the Darwin DVD about how to use a TT is excellent for technique. also, you cant beat a mirror to help with practice.

having said all that, presentation is everything, and your presentation will be enhanced by confidence. if a more "realistic" TT helps yr confidence and so optimises your presentation, perhaps a www.magic-Frediup.com TT is for you. i have a couple and the detail is AMAZING! expensive, but VERY VERY good.

hey i know this is going slightly away from the topic but i just re-read that initial post is it just me or does £12 for a TT seem a tad steep i usually pay no more than a fiver for mine. for £12 i'd be wanting one that had a built in dvd player lol

Everyone here is right, i did a note vanish the other night for some friends and i ended up doing it like 10 times and nobody noticed a thing, people can view you from all angles, most people suspect a pocket in the hand or something, a TT doesn't even cross their minds! But if you're still worried about ur TT colour then i suggest a vernet one from magictricks.co.uk. Top quality and it fits very well, on my thumb at least!

Another thing of advice about the TT. Be creative. Dont just vanish a note and pull it out from ur pocket. Do something impossible. Produce it from a pillow case, from a spectators wallet, from, if ur feeling risky, a spectators pocket, just make sure they dont go in first.

I thought I would once again chime in on the idea that "tone doesn't matter"......I was doing a roaming cocktail party show last night. Idid the very basic silk vanish using my TT - which I might add isn't even close to the colour of my hand. The gentleman then said, "I have seen that done before using a rubber T.....but I have never seen it done barehanded like you just did!" at first I though this was his subtle way of telling me he knew how it was done, but after more candid discussion.....it was obvious that he totally missed my TT........once again, he knew about the device, the tone was totally off, but he still didn't catch it!......so TONE DOESN'T MATTER! TECHNIQUE DOES!!!!!!!

I believe Pat Page used to perform demonstrations using a bright red TT. I myself found the colour gettting darker than my skin after using it for Money Morphs. I decided to order a new one but it was too flexible & soft for my purposes. It was then that I woke up to the fact that no one should see the TT & I still use the darker one.

Dont vanish a lit cigarette, it burns the TT then your hand and changes the TT's colour.
But Vernet ones are great!
Also use a card as a 'wand' it is a great concealer.

A tt is meant to be an unseen gimmick. My friend used a smartie tube once. After all back in the day they used like metal tube things so it dont matter wat colour it is really.

I'm never sure if it's better to resurrect old threads (which people on forums tend to hate) or start a new thread on something that's already been discussed. On account of it being a magic forum, I'm going for the resurrection option...

I've got your bog standard vernet hard plastic TT, like it a lot. Seems to be though, vanishing a lit cigarette isn't a great idea (not tried, but seems advised against). Will the softer vinyl style ones take a cig a bit better?
Failing that, is a layer or two of tin foil the way forward?

Does anyone use the vinyl ones? Most places just seem to sell the solid ones...

I'd think that a metal tip would be better than a plastic one if you are going to be doing cigarette vanishes. There's one listed at Cards4Magic for £4.

hard vernets take a ciggy.. no problems.
Remember two things.

One.... allow a lot of ash to build up on the tip prior to the vanish.
This acts as insulation.

Two..
once in, vanish it quickly. The air is forced out, extinguishing it straight away.

Since you dont see it.. this is not an issue.

Ive vanished hundreds of ciggies( including one splif in my local park )
and have had no issues with discolouring, (which is burning.)
Follow the two runes of thumb above, and you will be fine.

Hardly my bag of tea, and not something that I've ever done, but I must say the cigarette vanish into back of borrowed jacket is one of my all-time favourite things to do with a TT.

I reckon the TT is one of the most awesome inventions in the history of magic. Always got one on me these days. Good for some impromptu (depending on your definition of the word I guess) fun. And it gives me a use for that pocket that jeans have which is too small for anything else, but the perfect hold out for a TT. Always wanted to find a use for it...

I know it's maybe been a bit over used and over exposed, but most people (and I'd wager a lot of magicians) see it as a gimmick to vanish silks. Anything else and their mind just doesn't go there.

(Unless you hold your hands out and say 'look, nothing in my hands, no gimmicks on any of my thumbs whatsoever'.)
