UK law's about swords.

Postby k88 » Dec 26th, '06, 17:32

Hey there TM'ers!

I haven't really been on here much lately, kind of busy and had a little rest on magic.

Hope you've all had a good Christmas and hope Santa brought you what you want

But anyway my question was about UK's laws about swords...well technically a Anime Replica Sword ^^. [Any Anime fans out there? Bleach?]

Its 37" made from 440 Stainless Steel in black. Comes sharpened. From Amazon.com

So I was would that sword make it over from America to the UK without any hassle?

And for any Bleach fans out there its Ichigo's Bankai black one :D

Thanks!

I dont know much on the subject myself, the only sword I have is a purely decorative one with no edge ( but enough weight to knock any intruder for 6 if they dont run away feared for their life first but shh ) but maybe that link will help

Ooo right thanks!

So it didn't really list anything about swords, just daggers, knives and weird weapons I have not heard of (>_<).

By the way the sword you got did you order it online from America?

And i forgot to mention before, no I'm not planning on wacking anyone, its for display ^^.

Thanks Nakedmagic.

Well thats basically a list of banned weapons, so if you dont see the one your after listed, then aslong as your open and honest with whatever authorities you encounter then you shouldnt have any trouble

I don't think there should be any problem regarding such swords. Apart from magic, I also do medieval reenactment and so I do have a sword and although that's a blunt one, I do know that you can perfectly legally get all kinds of sharp swords from British armouries. I don't think there is any legal limitation on the type of sword you may have, rather it's the way you use or don't use it that matters.

You could fall foul of various laws - offensive weapons act if you have it in public or having an article that is bladed or pointed in a public place. Both of these are in public places so OK in your own home but it is also against the law to transport dangerous articles through the post so it depends how it is packaged and whether anyone decides to open it. If you get it from abroad there is probably a law about importing dangerous articles too.

And I just tried to buy the sword, but the seller doesn't ship to the UK
Amazon said they can't too.

But I found this other place that do :D .

But does anyone know where I can get, how do I put this, the newest most reliable law about swords and importing them?

That was a really c**p explanation but hope you get me.

Or does anyone know if it would be fine getting into the country?

Thanks!

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1988/Uk ... 3_en_1.htm

ref 139 to 142 - articlicles with blades etc. Should give some pointers as to importation, or not as the case may well be.

Best to go strait to the government for this sort of stuff, give them a ring as the act was 1988 and although this is the latest act its a baseline, new amendments are being made all the time. Customs or the local police will tell you.
