Hello and Merry Christmas

Postby Mancunian Lee » Dec 25th, '06, 17:18

Hi

Im Lee from Mighty Manchester, one of the finest citys in the world

I have a huge interest in social science and psychology, I like knowing what makes people tick, what makes them act a certain way in various circumstances. Im not sure if im here to learn magic tricks or not, but i know im here to find out what magicians get from there art and see how it all fits in with history, religion and peoples thought processes when confronted with a great trick.

My main interest in magic is mentalism, its amazing and performed by amazing people, even if i get just a small insight into how its done ill be happy.

Hi! Wrong site! We do not really reveal anything here! The site is more aimed at wan-a-be magicians, hobbyists and there is even a number of full time professionals here.

Magic is slight of mind!

To help you look around:

If you're interested in a layman's view of magic/mentalism you might find Derren Brown's new book interesting (Tricks of the Mind):
http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic14525-0-asc-0.php
http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic15447-0-0-asc-.php

If you're interested in becoming a mentalist you will find 13 Steps to Mentalism by Tony Corinda quite invaluable:
http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2054

If you're interested in any skeptic beliefs of some magicians, the following people may be of interest - James Randi, Banachek, Penn and Teller. Do some research on them, it should be quite interesting.

If you like amazing mentalism performed by amazing mentalists, I think you'll like Banachek.

oh and welcome 8), sorry I got carried away.....

Thanks, ive got the Derren Brown book but im currently reading the new Chris Moyles one so thats coming up next.

Ill certainly look up the skeptics, i saw Pen and Tellers show "Bullsh*t" when they covered cold reading for what id consider immoral purposes, things like contacting the dead on behalf of the berieved and taking advantage of peoples for profit. Things like this i dont consider mentalism, i know some people do i just find this sort of preying on the vunerable immoral.

I know Derren Brown uses similar/same techiniques for entertainment and i consider that to be mentalism. I think Pen and Teller missed this out on the show, i dont know what they have said about the other stuff though but ill look forward to reading about it.

I think it works, ive read a lot on social science and psychology so i believe it to be true. Even though i dont know how its done - oh how naive am i? :D

Hi Lee!

I think we can learn a lot about what makes people tick from their reaction to magic. You are confronting an audience to an impossible situation at times - how do they react to it? For example, have you ever noticed how many people just burst out laughing (a genuine, uncontrolled outburst) even though the just seen a very straight up presentation of a miracle type trick?

I know very little about psychology but I too like watching people and working out how they tick, maybe you can help us all learn a little more about the subject.

In return I'm sure you'll pick up many insights from this forum but very few direct methods of how particular tricks actually work. For me that's more valuable than a 'magic secrets revealed' type arrangement - hope you find some value in it too..

Welcom to TM!

There is a tonne of stuff on the forum about starting out as a mentalist (check out support and tips). It is a long road but a worthy one full of neat insights with many parallels in the social sciences, especially psychology, although my psychology colleagues consider themselves natural scientists :) Read 13 Steps to Mentalism and Anneman's Practical Mental Magic and you will have enough material for years to come!
