Support on Cards

Postby mentorsriddle » Dec 19th, '06, 22:07

I have been doing coin magic, ring magic, and a few things with card magic.

I would really love to start doing more card magic “other than mindbender” that have a great effect, and look.
What could some of you recommend?

Books? Singular tricks? Etc.?

Best book to get to start you off is The Royal Road To Card Magic, by Jean Huguard, its a great book that tells you about handling and basic tricks...

also i got myself the enciclopedia of card magic, another great document with various tricks, and also includes tricks with gaffed/gimmick decks (but not that many)

The Royal Road in downloadable, but if you'd rather a hard copy, its available, on discount, from www.whsmith.co.uk, for £6.50, or thereabouts. I havnt seen it anywhere cheaper for brand new.

As people have said, you can't really beat Royal Road when it comes to a good book on cards.

Yes but Royal Road is simply a must to have in your collection. It gives a solid grounding, though I agree it is a bit dated in terms of the text.

I would go with Card College 5 book set at £110 I think. Very extensive, much much more modern and has a Royal Road feel to it but much easier to understand. Mark Wilsons book is briliiant for effects but the instruction for sleights is nowhere nearas extensive as Royal Road or Card College.

I bought Mark Wilsons book to extend my repotoire of tricks but mainly to learn things other than cards.

I do with that Royal Road didn't get automatic recommendations. I reckon that most who buy it barely read past the first few chapters anyway.

Reading Royal Road is like wading through treacle. It's in need of a major re-write to bring it up to date. There are far better learning tools out there now and I'd agree with Stevebo's recommendation of Born To Perform by Oz Pearlman for a starter.

I don't know about Card College other than I've heard good things about it.

the easy to master card miracles series blows "born to perform" out of the water..the downside is thatits hosted by Michael Ammar

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

 I know. Easy to mastercard miracles does go into some good detail but Michael Ammar isnt the most brilliant teacher now. I think for me its that I talk so fast and he talks so slow, I find it hard to stay awake. I keep thinking Im playing it in slowmo

The card college collection is very good. As long as you are happy to spend a long time going through the material you will have a great source of card magic.,

The language isn't great in royal road, like "use the third phalanx of the left middle finger at the inner end of the deck to..." WHAT ???

BUT...thats how i learned and i suspect there are a few more people out there who did. It gives you a solid grounding in that if you study through it as it suggests, you will master the ESSENTIALS before trying to tackle the more difficult sleight. Also when you have had a good grounding, the time it takes to learn the harder sleights is greatly reduced. if you learn a good overhand shuffle it shouldn't take you too long to learn the slip force. There are many examples of this.

i think too many people learn from DVD's and perhaps skip the more tedious thing of shuffling again and again and again...

Which is so contemporary :)

In my novice research, there is nothing better for someone who wants to get into card magic than the Royal Road.
