It's OK. It uses a different (and IMO an inferior) method than some of the other similar effects. Also, it's got a funky back design, if that matters to you. If you've been doing some stuff with, say, a Bicycle deck, and then pull out this deck...

I'd recommend "Oscar" or one of the other decks of this type out there over this one.

You have an excuse for pulling out a deck with a funky back design, the cards have got different names on the back. You cant do very many card routines with decks that have names on them.

I would recomend Phil over one of the other versions called I'll Name Your Card as this uses cards with stickers on them rather than properly printed ones. Also I've got an idea that it may be a slightly inferior method as well, but don't quote me on that.

I understand that--I have the trick. I just don't like pulling out a deck that looks like nothing the audience has ever seen, even if it has something written on the back. I perform similar effects, but use Bicycle decks to do so. It's a matter of personal preference--I was simply informing you that this deck has a strange back. If it doesn't matter to you, go for it.

The thing about audience seeing a deck they've never seen before isn't really applicable in the UK as no-one here, apart from magicians, uses bicycle cards. In fact, if anything the cards used in Phil look more like those that anyone here might have seen than the bikes themselves so we should probably be more worried about producing them than anything else! It also seems to me that very few people here use poker size cards, most people who comment on my bikes say that they seem pretty big rather than commenting on the design.

Nick that is a very good point m8, I get more comments on my "weird" bikes than I ever do if I use something else, the only experience of them we have here is Blaine etc.

We in this country just don't use such large cards, in fact we aren't really a card nation, mostly people have free packs that came with tea bags or something, lol.

Waddingtons are the most common here I think. I have to say that despite my last post I don't get many comments as long as I don't draw attention to the cards, and to be honest people should be more interested in what you are doing than in the cards you are using to do it.

I'd say Waddingtons No. 1 cards are the most common here, too.

I think the difficulty lies in any kind of deck switching. If you are using one type of deck, then switch to another type, people will assume that something is up with one or both of the decks.

This is less suspicious if you have a valid reason for using a different deck (for example stuff written or drawn on the first deck, or you've done a "torn and restored" effect), but simply swapping decks over looks odd.

However, even then, using different brands looks at best slightly unprofessional (not that I am a professional, but you know what I mean) and might still be suspicious to some. After all, you'd expect even an amateur magician to have more than one deck of the same brand, wouldn't you?

The alternative is, of course, to do only one card trick, but if you are a card worker, that isn't really an option. For me, it's not a great problem because I tend to only do a couple of effects at a time.

I can't say I have had anyone comment on Bicycle cards, but I don't perform that often.
