Debate is for people unsure of their own opinions!
Over to you

I don't personaly think anybody has get het up enough to need to calm down, words are just words and we are using them to debate but I take the above points, consider me quelled ;)

My point regarding splitting the thread was merely so the what next advice stayed where it was and we didn't scare the guy away with this 'debate' which I doubt will be of as much use as the inevitable conclusion that we should all do what we feel most comfortable with. I think, in fact, that the best what next advice would have been to say 'here are the different types of magic, which do you like the idea of most?' and then pointing him at tricks in that branch.

I have no objections to splitting the thread at a suitable point but not fully sure about how to actually do it!

Personally I think the whole thread is relevant to the original question. I’m not sure why a good natured debate should scare anyone away, it just gives a variety of opinions to the question and in this case reasons for those opinions. I also think it is very healthy for example Nick originally said:

“And before anyone else mentions the key books:

Royal Road to Card Magic (Hugard & Braue) for magic with an ordinary deck of cards.
Modern Coin Magic (Bobo) for coins.
Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic for an overview of everything.

I would suggest getting used to doing tricks without gimmicks as soon as possible”

Having given more thought to the subject courtesy of the debate he said:

“For people who only know a couple of tricks obviously the best course is to buy new, easy to work stuff….”

Not only do we see the opinions but because of the debate we get to find out why those opinions are held, which I would suggest is even more useful because most of the differences are a result of coming from a different starting point, therefore if I was new it would be very helpful if not only did I get an opinion on the best next step, but I could see why they were suggesting that particular route and I could then pick the advice that had the most similar starting point to the one I was actually at.

Further it helps all of us to be able to see things a different way, by having our thoughts rationally and respectfully challenged, and I’d say this was a very good thing.

i love it i love it when people talk about me MagicDiscoMan ego sutably abated i should point out a few points:-

my use of gimmicked cards namely svengali and stripper came about out of nesecity rather than a desire not to spend time learnig slights it took me a year to learn the french drop medicaly speeking.
i was also excepted on this forum because i have made a carear out of useing props and gaffs in my shows and on the premise that you dont need to be a slight expert to perform great magic, im sur siegfried and roy blessing be upon them could back palm an elephant but i recon the would prefer to use a easier method so on that premise ishall stick to my gunns and only recomend stuff i myself feel is tried and tested and refer the rest for referense.
in my time i have read books covering a wide range of magical subjects and feel there is a place for both views and i firmly feel that with technology today that to take a striper deck as example i would recomend that a newbie use one to give him performance experience then add some slights like the bouble lift and turn for reveals as his confidence grows

Then it shall stay as it is!

This has been fun, I have come to see that despite the fact that my opinion is obviously the best and the way everyone should go (and also the way I will continue to advise people to study) it is not the only way, even if the other ways are vastly inferior and to be looked down upon!

Sorry guys, but I must point out...

(Obviously that gag works better if you're in the same room as me and can see that I'm actually pointing)
