professors nightmare patter

Hi guys just trying to get some ideas for a story line for the classic three rope routine.

I currently perform the routine with the following patter:

I did this trick using three unequal rope for my freind who is a matamatician.

He asked me to show proof that the ropes are uneven.
I said that the ropes start at the same place (holding the rope at the top)
and end in different places, so therefore they must be different lengths.

My freind then suggests that if you bring all the ends to the top then are the now the same length........

I then do the performance to show the rope all equal and then with further patter i get them back to unequal again.

My question is does anyone have any other story lines that they use as i would like to add a couple more phases from the fibre optics DVD (which is briliant by the way)? I am just looking for ideas or subject to use.
Many thanks.

How about lynching.

If you're a mixed media magician, it might be nice after a robbers story with cards. You could go back to the cards afterwards to show they'd escaped during the confusion/misdirection :)

You could even use three more cards for the hangmen and then have them turn out to be the robbers.

etc.

I'll stop now.

I do this routine along with the fibre optics all the time (great routine!) and I dont have a particular patter but act throughout the routine as if it is going wrong and that the ropes are not doing what they are meant to be doing.
This adds good laughs and is even better I find if you can do the fiber optics routine really quickly as the bemused faces of the audience is a picture and they seem to really enjoy the fact that as they see two ropes change into one and then back into two within a few seconds.
You need lots of practice to go quick though so get plenty in but it is well worth it

Thanks for the advice guys.
I really like the idea of treating the tick like i have messed up. This would bring a more comical feel to the routnie.
I am planning to do this if front of an adult audience(about 5-10 people).
So i am sure this would work well.
Better start practicing.

You can vary the patter accordingly, depending on who you are performing to.

I recently did a performance for a load of IT people and used a patter where the rope was a network cable etc. You can generally find an avenue to suit if you find out a little about who you are performing to.

I like the topic for your patter! The standard patter often include the joke, "here I have three ordinary pieces of rope than can be found in any ordinary bedroom". Maybe, you should weave in one or two jokes about your mathematician friend. Maybe be the line:

"He is extrovert since he looks at YOUR shoes when you talk to him".

will create a few smiles.

Magic is slight of mind!
