When the patter bores you......

Postby Jordan C » Jan 18th, '07, 20:28

I have sevral tricks where I have altered or changed the patter altogether as I either do not like the patter provided or I just feel I have my own patter that would work better.....

2 examples of where I have completely changed the patter is Sneek a Peek and Daryl's Ultra Monte.....

So what tricks have you got where the patter either bored you or simply didnt inspire you so you came up with your own unique patter?

I did this with Holy Moly by Jay Sankey....altered the effect to use casino chips and put a gambling patter with it to make it more relavant.

I also use my own patter with Dai Vernon's Twisting the Aces, Paul Harris's Immaculate Connection, .....man the list could go on forever....I find that I start with the patter, but begin to turn it into my own as performance time with the effect goes on!

i don't like the idea of using the same patter as is included with a trick. i sound stupid when I'm repeating something i've rehersed. so i generally know roughly what to say and fill in the rest on the spot, i prefere it to sound more spontaneous. i've always found that seems somewhat more... realistic or personal.

I don't think I've ever used canned patter. I just extract the mechanics, study them and create my "own" effect.

I can rarely remember canned patter so I have to do my own - far less effort!

It's something that you develop as you grow in experience. I used to when starting out, try the tricks with the 'canned' patter as it's been called but like many, there are now very few effects where I don't use my own.

Excellent topic Jordan!
Inspired by Little Britain, I did the classical card trick, where the chosen card is the only card facing down in a face up deck, and I ended by turning it slowly around, saying: Which leaves him the only gay in the village! and it got a lot of laughter and completely changed the atmosphere... especially because the card was the jack of diamonds :D

To be honest i always use my own patter and try to change a few sleights so i can make the trick my own in a way.

...always change the patter, that's my view...

it sounds far too robot-like if you copy others, cos everyone has their own speech patterns and rythmns afterall...pauses and inflections...

Aside from patter, I used to also find that it was sometimes beneficial to restructure or even re-write the effect to fit with my own requirements.

Very rarely do I see an effect which doesn't need a little personal refinement.

There's nothing wrong with doing this. In fact, I think it's what separates your mindset from being a magic junkie and an 'out of the box thinker'.

I develop my own patter for all tricks, it needs to suit your own personality, Plus you can adlib easier with the public, this helps them to feel part of things and not like the trick is being done to them rather than for them.
