Printing your own custom Bikes.

Postby bananafish » Dec 16th, '03, 12:06

I've jus seen this advertised at Alakazam, and was wondering if it could be as good as it sounds.

Versatile Monte by Mark Allen DVD
http://www.alakazam.co.uk/acatalog/Hot_List_1.html

It would appear that the main body of the DVD concerns how to print your own gaffed/customised bike cards using a standard PC and inkjet printer.

'm very tempted with this, as the possibilities are so numerous. (wombats too numerous to mention*) Has anyone got it yet - if so, some feedback would be nice. :)

I saw this as well and was wondering. Add that to the item available at cards4magic and it looks as though we might be able to run off a few specials more easily than we first thought. As long as the ink dries OK and doesn't smudge or slip out of alignment in the printer, this could all be very useful indeed!

If you check out my card info thread you will find software for doing just this kind of DIY card making :)

Hope that helps

Nice one BaBaBoom. I'd forgotten all about that set of links. Maybe we should make it sticky somewhere (ooh err missus).

My thoughts on the software on the DIY link was that you wouldn't easily be able to print on blank faced Bike cards - and so any gaffed card that was created wouldn't easily melt into an otherwise ordinary deck of cards.

What I am hoping with the DVD mentioned above - is that it would allow you to actually print on the face of genuine blank faced bike cards.

The problem with printing the back of the Bike cards is simply the difficulty in being able to match the colours to fit into an ordinary deck.

ahhhh
Sorry then, that doesn't help, lol.

As en ex printer specialist/fixer/kicker there are many problems with printing Bikes in a pc printer I'm afraid.

Firstly the insides of the average inkjet is made from very brittle, thin plastic and though they sell card for use in them it is created to go with the mechanism, even then using card in an inkjet is not good for it.
If you have a £300 model this should improve but cheap or normal inkjets wouldnt like it at all I'm afraid. It just shortens the life.
There is also the keeping the bikes stuck firmly to something as if one comes off in the printer something will object, like the gears perhaps :(

Anyway, I haven't looked at the workings of new printers as this was a job long gone and I am not saying it can't be done, just please be carefull.
Try ringing the printers helpline and say "I've just put some card in my printer and heard a crunching noise" and see if they tut knowingly, lol.

There is also the problem of the ink and plastic, if it bonds at all I would recommend only printing one sheet at a time to give it chance to dry before the next sheet is dragged across the top of it.

Hope it helps,
BaB

ps- ooooo I've never had a sticky one :)

I print my own bussiness cards and can say having had most of the top brands of printers that you should only feed one sheet of card at a time in as they dont realy like printing on card.
best of the bunch for card printing has to be hewlard packard in my opinion.

nearest ive done is scaning and printing card stock to a4 for jumbo card tricks, blank bikes could be used but not sure of results and they would need tobe tacked to an ascetate sheet for feeading in, possibly?.

I've just looked at the software link in more detail and there is a link on there to buy card stock, properly backed (though not bikes) to put through your printer.
Interesting as it is obviously possible to do what you want, all be it on sheets constructed for the job.
Obviously you want bikes but if these cards are of any quality than maybe worth a think as you could then use them to carry on with your routine.
Interesting, not 100% what you are after but interesting to see they are available.

This could be very useful for specials, advertising, gaffed oddball cards & signs. I'm very tempted!

I bought this DVD recently (as in, it arrived last Saturday). I had a very quick look at it and it looks OK. I was wondering if I should review it, when I saw this thread. I'm happy to have a go when I've had the chance to sit down with it properly. The DVD alleges that it offers tips on using a domestic printer, but I must admit the concerns expressed here match my ones.

Maybe I'll be in the market for a new printer soon!

I might not be able to tell you if the actual printing tips work for a while, though.

A review would be great once you have had a chance to play with it for a while, as my guess is you are going to be asked an awful lot of questions.

This is certainly something I'd like to know a lot more about. Well done for buying it. :)

oooo a review, this one has a lot of interest, I look forward to that.

As fas as the air cushioning goes, it can only be done in the states as they take the air from Yellowstone Park and glue it on with special airfix.

Once again, I'll get my coat...
