I bought the dragon thread dvd a wile back at the first magic live convention in Vegas... my thoughts on it are that it is not worth the money... the effect is a nice one but can be learned from better sources that dont require you to purchase refills to perform i also found the special easy to use thread to be more difficult than normal thread.. as far as if or not you can create the same effect with ordinary thread it depends on semantic's ... the dragon thread is the name of the specific version shown in the dvd so to pull that off you kneed the thread provided.. but the trick it self is just a form of a far older trick called the Gypsy thread. the Gypsy thread can be done with any thread the difficulty is in the set up... there are allot of books on the subject but i would recommend getting your hands on the IMS DVD with Eugene burger ... his version is by far my favourite

:) It is an interesting handling of this old effect and certainly works very close up, with people breathing down the back of your neck! You do not need any special refills as any silk embroidery thread ( sold in skeins at all knitting shops) can be used,
I prefer the Flash T & R String by Henry Evan as sold by JB Magic, price eight pounds in which you ignite the balled up knot and it flashes to the restored 'string'.
There is a great 2 colour thread version in Shaun Yee's lecture notes and of course Geoffrey Buckingham put out his version in one of his books.
You probably would be best buying The Hindu Gypsy Thread book by Lewis Ganson, poublishe by Supreme magic and available form Magic Books By Post at £7:50p.

Torn and Restored string is indeed a great trick, I love it and use it a lot as I am always clean after!!
