Hello from the MysteryMan

Postby MysteryMan » Jan 28th, '07, 16:58

Hello, everybody. I realized as soon as I got on this site that many of you are incredibly experienced magicians. I hope to learn a lot and that everybody will be helpful and vast pools of great knowledge for an avid youg magician.

If you haven't already, please check out my post "Hellstromism" under the Miscellaneous boards. I would love suggestions as to good books on the advanced techniques. Thanks again.

Well, I'm 15 and currently a sophomore in high school. I used to do magic as a kid; I actually bought one of John Tremaine's "starter magic" books. I stopped because, as a kid, I had no patience and I didn't want to practice at all. I started up recently because I love it when I can go up to someone randomly in my lunchroom, borrow a quarter, and bite it in half. The look on people's faces never gets old.

I play tennis, and I am an Eagle Scout. I'm on the Mock Trial team at my school; I've been interested in law since first grade.

My favorite trick right now has to be the quarter bite due to the fact that I get the biggets reactions from it, but I still haven't publicly performed the Raven yet. Unfortunately, American currency isn't mgnetic, but I did learn that Canadian quarters are (or mine is a counterfeit). The trick that I would like to perfect is the Ambitious Card. I usually get stuck on the DL. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Sounds great!

I'm not sure which part of the D/L is teasing you, but there is a great book, that's cheap too, called: The Royal Road to Card Magic. If you have some money to spend, there is a 5 DVD set with the same name. Don't buy the 4 DVD set, it's rubbish. Only the R. Paul Wilson one :)

Also, practice in front of a mirror, but don't hog the bathroom :P
Get a small mirror, around a normal sheet of paper, with a frame that you can adjust on a desk. Then just sit in front of it and see the spectator's view. I thought I sucked at the pass and D/L untill I saw my own hands holding a deck in a mirror and it worked!

Ah... there is also a very good DVD from Ellusionist, for $39.95, called: Card Crash-2. It's dynamite!
Good luck man!

PS. Do you still do a secret hand shake in the scouts? I used to... :)

The part of the DL that causes me trouble is the fact that the trick is supposed to be constant action, or, as I like to call it, "perpetual mimoso" (or something like that. I think it's Latin for "perpetual motion"). Anyway, since the trick is fast, I have a hard time getting a fingerbreak for the lift. It makes it kinda obvious when you slide off one card at a time, line them up, and do the lift

Thanks for the books and mirror idea. I hope to add card magic as a new part of my repetoire (so far I suck at it :) ).

PS- No, there is no secret handshake. It's just the left hand. And they took out the interlocking pinkyfingers, too. I don't know if it would be different in Iceland, though.

Left hand, interlocking little fingers is the Scout handshake here.

You'll find what you need for the D/L in the book or DVDs, but then it all comes down to practice, practice, practice... :)

Good luck!
