VERY Quick Wax Question....

Postby LazyKat420 » Jan 28th, '07, 16:35

Is there ANY difference between Michael Ammars wax for the Card On Ceiling trick and the wax i already have, which is just normal soft magician's wax..? Is it like especially soft or something?

(Asking because when you read the lable, it really makes it sound like its different somehow and made for this trick only, and others cant be used for COC...
If it IS the same, I find it weird that he chose to limit his product to just one trick. I mean, if he had just put the broader descprition on the lable ("soft wax"), then people would buy it to use for 100s of tricks and not just one... hummmm~)

Thanks in advance

You could try your other wax out to see if it works for CoC.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

it "works" but not THAT well, but it also might be the way im throwing it...
but i was still wondering if there was an actual difference between the normal soft stuff and MA's seemingly 'specialized' stuff

Hello

I have both the card to ceiling wax and some normal soft wax and I have to say that for card to ceiling it is far better to use the Michael Ammar stuff as it is far more reliable. The soft wax I have rarely sticks whilst the Ammar stuff results in stuff never coming off the ceiling
( there is still a card on the ceiling of the Ben Crouch pub, London that I threw up there a few years ago)

OK there are a few things you need to consider when choosing card on ceiling wax. First it should not be too soft or it will not adhere to flat surfaces. The best wax I have used is Mike Ammar's but he also provided me with the recipe which I am happy to share. Why because it is easier to buy Mike Ammar's wax than to make your own.

You need 1 beeswax tablet (approx 4inches x 1 inch) and a teaspoon of vaseline. Ammar also adds a teaspoon of Glycerine but this is not absorbed by the wax as it hardens so I don't use it. The wax and vaseline are melted in a saucepan and then poured out onto grease-proof paper and allowed to cool. At room temperature the wax will not seem very sticky. that is because the air has allowed the exposed surface to harden. This is the key to making the trick work.

Pull off a piece of the wax and roll it into a ball about 1cm in diameter. Now reshape the ball into a pyramid shape or solid cone. Leave this to harden. When you are ready to perform you can pick up the cone easily as it is only slightly sticky and as you apply it to the back of the card you simply give it a little twist. This exposes the soft wax indie and allows it to stick. When you throw the deck up the cone collapses on impact and creates a sticky pad that keeps the card on the ceiling. Thsi method has never let me down. I used it to stick a card with a missing corner onto the ceiling 25ft high at Bath University during Mark Leveridges close-up Symposium and then stick the missing corner up there beside it. (It's still there, beside Mike Ammars!)

Do I make my own? Not any more I just Buy Ammar's.

Glad to be of service. That is the benfit of forums like this.

One tip, don't be too mean with the size of the wax cone.

If the ceiling you are throwing at has a heavily textured or "dusty" surface then use a good sized piece to ensure good surface contact.

Good luck.
