David Blaine Exposure - SIGN THE PETITION

Postby Salt » Feb 3rd, '07, 00:49

itricks.com - Herbert Becker believes magic owes him a debt of gratitude and since the publication of his book All The Secrets of Magic Revealed in 1995, his critics have contended the exact opposite.

His writing career has since seen the publication of several other books dedicated to magic exposure and in 2008 he will add The Magic Secrets of David Blaine to that list, his first book in 11 years. Yet no matter the controversy, the author is absolute in his belief that his contributions to the magic industry have been phenomenal.

i asume he's not giving thease books away free then, how is this any diferent than buying houdinies biography or the black book of streat magic your still paying for secrets.

unless you are worried about copyright infringment which i asume has been ironed out after all blain probably learnt his streat tricks from the same texts i did most if not all avalable to the public domain at a price.

I'm not suporting the book just posing a question.

Agreed.

Exposure to me is jsut giving out the secrets. If there are for sale, and he has permission to print these effect, or came up with his own methods, then i dont see it being any different from others saleing a book on magic.

Let's be honest, how many methods are there for standing on a pole for 35 hours or floating in an 8 foot sphere filled with water? And, does anyone really care how he did it? :)

Actually, does anyone know what effects Becker is planning on printing? And has Becker ever published anyone's secrets without their permission? I did a quick search and could not find evidence that he has.

I'm going to burn my Mark Wilson Complete Course In magic right now. Along with Tarbell, Seriously Silly by David Kaye. Not forgeting Orwitz, Henning Berg, Daryl DVD's, Etc etc etc etc.

Talk Magic should be closed down straight away and reported to the Magic Circle.

Most of the members here have bought books, DVD's or vids, exposing magic.

Whats that? He is SELLING the book, not just posting it for free?

THINK HARD AND CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU ANSWER THIS>>>>>>

How did you learn magic?

DOH!!!

I read the first draft of the book... i really enjoyed chapter 11: "Stooges".

by the time 2008 rolls around DB will have introduced us to a hundred new effects not in the book but for what it's worth, i would prefer the book was never published and just DB and I new all the secrets.

a brief pause as tounge is removed from cheek...

for interest's sake, one can copyright the written description of a magic effect. in fact in most countries the author is automatically awarded copyright on publishing for up to 70 years after his death (this varies a little from country to country).

one can also "potentially" get some intellectual property protection on a gimmick. assuming it is both new and novel and could not be easily anticipated by "joe average" based on what else is around, a patent may be possible.

however the actual method, the "way" an effect is done, can not be legally "protected". morally of course, a different story and there are some nuances from country to country but the above is generally the situation.

Let me be brutally honest...Nobody gives a sh*t about magic except magicians. Nobody is going to walk into the book store and ask for this book except a magician (or someone with an interest in magic). They will not flock to the stores seeking David Blaine's secrets, unless they are magicians. And, those magician's who buy the book (because signing a petition will not stop the publication, especially if they see a dollar to be made) will be the ones who signed the petition, mostly.

The best thing that you, or anyone, can do, is simply ignore this whole tempest in a tea cup.

Mike.

I agree.
I don't approve of tricks posted free on the internet (apart from maybe simplistic beginners ones) or exposed on tv shows, but to buy a book you would have to be interested in the subject in the first place.
Amazon sell magic books, whic doesn't mean all the secrets are exposed. If people want to know how somethings done then they can seek it out, buy it and if inclined learn it but I doubt many lay people are going to shell out cash just to know how some tricks are done.
How many years have IT, the Swami and T-T's been about? Yet they are still used frequently without suspicion.
