mechanics grip

Postby AcrylicAce » Feb 5th, '07, 05:19

Sorry I am making lots of post... i really am just addicted to this and have alot of things I want to learn. :)

I was just wondering... In the mechanics grip they say if you are right handed (and I am) that you should hold the deck in your left hand. I am having a heck of a time doing this. It feels SO much more natural to put the deck in my right and and deal off with my left. Should I force myself to learn to hold the deck in my left hand (will these be better in the long term?) or should I just go with what is more comfortable for me?

Thanks,

go with whats most comfortable. but most of the time if your right handed, you hold the deck in your left hand.

you might have a slightly harder time learning effects though, since most are taught by right handed people that carry the deck in their left hand.

since you deal with your left hand, most people would think your left handed.

It is much harder... so confusing... i might just try to switch to the other way. It just feels so weird. I don't know why I deal cards naturally left handed... I do EVERYTHING else right handed. What a pain...

Do what ever you find easy for you, I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as it works for you.

Yes i would go with whatever feels comfatable for you but it cant do any harm to learn it with both hands if you have the time.

In many effects your right hand will play a lead role away from the cards such as providing instruction to your audience, misdirection etc. These actions will be much more natural with your dominant (right) hand.

If you're looking at getting some XCM moves down then the left hand often takes a passive roll ("just" holding the cards) with the right hand actively manipulating them. Training your left hand to take on this roll later on could be a challenge (not impossible though!).

Be patient as I'm sure you're already painfully aware hand skills can take a long time to develop - it's a frustration because you can't just read about something then do it - your mind adapts very quickly but your muscles, nerves, tendons etc take a lot longer to 'learn'.

I'm right handed but my left hand is now far more adept at certain manouvers than my right due to repeated practice.

That's my opinion also as a newcomer to card handling. I'm sure the pro's will put me straight.

if you plan to do dodgy deals with cards...bottoms, seconds, centres e.t.c, then you may find it harder. then again, you may not. only time will tell really
