I.D. - that is inspired, well done sir!
The last time I went out for dinner with a young lady, we started the evening as just friends and ended it as something more... I paid, so make of that what you will.
[BTW that was only a month ago, we're still seeing each other - yay for me!

]
But that was a first date really (how many "friends" do you go out for meals for two with...?!), as students I expect we will split it in the future, she did really try to offer. Although the next time we go out for dinner I expect it'll be Valentine's Day, in which case I may end up paying again
You're not a cheap-ass Blapsing, especially at 17 when - pardon my assumptions - you probably don't have much more than a saturday job's worth of cash in the kitty week by week (especially if you're a magician with CUPS!). I on the otherhand am a student - I just ring it in with the other £1000's of debt and hope that I become a surgeon! Dining a lady is expensive; the mains plus wine, dessert if the meal has lacked elsewhere, coffee... it all adds up. I'm sure it doesn't bother the modern girl.
I will however offer these two pieces of sage wisdom (!):
a) Put a bit of effort into finding a restaurant that is romantic and nice, but reasonably priced. I didn't check the place out that we went to very much but was pleasantly surprised; the whole meal came to just over £40. If you go to places that do moroccan/mediterranean food, it will be tasty and interesting (hopefully), cosily decorated and lit (probably) and may well be very reasonably priced as well, allowing you to more frequently make that old fashioned gesture. Restaurants on high streets with stylish neon decor, an abstract name and a disproportionate number of dishes involving the word "jus" can often be intimidating, disappointing and then finally swing round to kick you in the wallet at the end. Go slightly off the beaten track and seek out smaller, family run restaurants who take pride in returning customers, not getting a mention in fashion mags.
b) This is even better - learn to cook! If you're blessed with abilities in the kitchen or can even just be bothered to buy a book or two (stick to achievable stuff first...!), you will be inviting your girl for fantastic food which costs as much as the accompanying bottle of wine. No designated driver or ridiculous taxi fares, no issues about the bill, and it's a natural progression to take your remaining half glasses of wine and snuggle up on the sofa. Perfect. Downside? You have to tidy up before she comes round...
