interesting pass....

Postby AcrylicAce » Feb 9th, '07, 02:29

Hey, I was just browsing youtube looking at how different people do different passes to see which methods seem to work best.

I came across this one and I was trying to see the pass but I couldn't.... then after watching it a few times I noticed something. It looks like he is keeping the very top card in the same place so that you can't see the white boarder of the top half of the deck moving off to the side. From there he seems to just do a DL to show the card.

Is this what he is doing or is he just damn good at the pass?

I hope it is OK that a post a video of someone else on here (and I hope it is ok that I ask about how he is doing it... am I revealing too much?!? If so, mods feel free to delete this thread or what needs to be deleted)... if it is one of you guys that would be great if you could chime in here!

Thanks!

I believe that pass is on Richard Kauffmans "On The Pass" And I don't think it was very well done.

I thought it looked very much like a D/L.

There is a D/L in there. As well as a certain type of pass. It is poorly performed and if you pay only a little attention, you can see it. And hear it.

I think it's called a top card cover pass, followed by d/l.

It is indeed a cover pass. They are an absolute wonder to behold if done well - there was a guy a few weeks ago in a magic shop wowing us all with it - but that was not done particularly well. Don't get me wrong, it's better than I could do right now...! But it's quite a hard move to learn - IMHO you'd be better just learning to use audience direction/misdirection and get away with a classic or riffle pass like people have been doing for years :)

it's true. that pass just screams "hey look, I'm doing a pass" whereas a touch of misdirection combined with what can even be a horribly sloppy pass can get the required effect invisibly. why you'd want someone to be staring at your hands all the time is beyond me.

You can even just cut the deck with the right misdirection. And dependent on the trick you can sometimes just cut the deck in full view and it doesn't raise suspicion.

Yeah, I mean... a good old fashioned double undercut is just as effective as a cover pass in the right hands. Unless the audience is Lennart Green.

The first one that shows the selected card back on the top (the second pass done) was a top card cover pass followed by a T/C, the rest appear to be top card cover passes with D/L. And i1011i is correct, it is in "On The Pass" (highly recommended btw).

I think he needs to work on his DL. The pass was fairly good, albeit not original (am I actually using the word albeit correctly?! Lol). But the DL definitely needs work.

Yeah, that's correct... albeit is a great word, like "nonetheless" and my personal favourite, "insofar as" :D

Don't forget, 'Not withstanding', a very useful set of wordage.
