Hi everyone, Im Luke.

Im presently a student getting ready for a levels (boring!) but recently i have been very interested in close up magic, mainly card magic. this stems from a very funny moment where my friends dadcame back to his house from work (hes a fireman) covered in soot and took the time to do the twisted sisters on me. From this point on i have been hooked. i have been down to davenports in charing cross and watched more tricks performed and i love it.
I am however stuck, i have got hugard's 'encyclopeadia of card tricks' and have read through that a few times though some of the stuff i find tricky because of the sleights. Does anyone know a realy good dvd on sleights of hand and a few tricks? I have also got a few packet tricks like twisted sisters, changing deck and so on, anymore reccomended tricks?
One more thing, do you all think its wise to stick solely to card magic because im thinking about buying the raven x2 and the healed and sealed trick but do you think i should slow down and master every little thing first?
cheers guys.

Hi Luke, and welcome.

I would advise you get as much Magic as budget allows, and find your own genre. Ravens and the like can be a part of your card performances - it all fits together.

It may be prudent to 'find your feet' before you become a card disciple!

A very difficult question to answer succinctly but I'd say you ought to check into as many different areas of magic as possible - not buying everything in sight - but see if there are any coin or rope routines which appeal, tricks using props are quite fascinating to specs and you can intersperse them with card tricks, sleight or packet type, to give a varied programme. As a spec, I'd appreciate variety rather than all tricks being of the same type.

Hey Luker21,
Welcome to the forum. Variety is important in a show. A whole routine of card magic could get boring, i'd vary it by learning close-up tricks with Coins, Rubber Bands (Hint - Crazy Man's Handcuffs), and Everyday Objects. Good luck.

Oh and from your other topic Flash paper, cotton and string are really cool. They add a nice kick to your tricks.

I'd agree with variety, try magic from all the different genres.

Reading posts on this forum will give you much useful information on where to go from here from quite a variety of different perspectives. There are a number of threads going into some detail on this issue.

Reading the reviews section will give you some idea on which tricks people here have liked or disliked and some idea how difficult they are.

There are a number of debates on the pro's and con's on gimmicked tricks vs sleight of hand and learning from which type of source.

You will get views from experienced people or from beginners that may have only recently faced the issues that you are now facing.

Then if you take the time to build relationships with some of the people on the board you will also find a lot of help off board via PM/email or AIM if you have it.

All of that is before you spend a penny on books, DVd's or tricks.

So wishing you all the best on your magical journey :)

just in case i didnt mention it before thanxs. and welcome to the board.

Age and Status in your Profile
To help other members form a more visual picture, it would be nice to include your age and 'magic status' as a small signoff in your profile.

We're standardising this to an additional bit of info in the Location panel in your profile... and the format is

(??A : ??S) where as the ??A = your age, and the ??S = your status, chosen from the list below...

EN = Eager Newbie
AH = Amateur Hobbyist
SH = Skilled Hobbyist
WP = Working Professional
CP = Career Professional

So, for example - your Location could be

"Kent, UK, (30:WP)", meaning you're a 30 year old working pro...

This is NOT obligatory, but may help during conversation!

Visting Professional Magicians - it would be much appreciated if you could please make yourselves known to one of the Moderators!
