Bags and balls, a definitive answer...

Postby Farlsborough » Feb 16th, '07, 02:03

Hey folks,
I'd actually quite like to do this bag and ball effect, so could people share their knowledge - especially if you have it already? I'm not looking for full on reviews as such, more a gathering of info, because so far this effect is called Kurotsuke (which I don't know how to get hold of...), Body Language, Equinox... the latter two being more than I want to pay for this effect. It can't be that hard. If someone knows of a book or mentalism compilation DVD that contains it, that would be ace, otherwise a good value product... I don't want to spend loads, but I don't want to end up having to do a bag switch or something dumb like that. Any help really would be appreciated! :D

kurotsuke is found on one of the max maven videomind dvds, it is a gimmick free version, easy to do. Done Max's way the ending can potentially be a little iffyish, but you should be able to come up with half a dozen ways to correct that within 5 minutes.

The advatage of body language, as i understand it, is that the bag can be handed out to the spectators rather than carried around by the mentalist, not really worth the cash if you perform it right noones going to remember that you never let go of the bag. Done my way, which you can pm me for, theres a good chance that after the first ball or two is selected you can then pass the bag to the spectators to finish for themselves.

Great effect, though can be stunningly dull. REAAALLY a piece requiring presentation. Derren Brown's performance on "something wicked this way comes" being the best example i've seen of a way t make this interesting.

Coins and envelopes

Postby DrTodd » Feb 16th, '07, 07:28

I have thought laterally about this and now use five pay envelopes, 4 dull 2p coins and 1 shiney 2p coin. The spectators arrange the coins in any envelope without me knowing. I then do a body language effect. It can be 'mostly' hands free depending on a few thingds, but it is the basic props that impress them. Just some coins and stationery envelopes.

It just so happens an ideal bag and ball effect is soon to hit the market...

And it won't cost the earth.

And it works.

PM me and I'll let you know...

I did an impromptu Wizard ring version of this at Christmas using just 4 10ps and 1 2p in a bag.

I know with body language you can let the spectator hold the bag to take the ball out but i dont think you can with kurotsoke. I know the workings of body language when Charles did a lecture at our club and it is very simple and easy to do and i think it would be the one i went for if i had a choice out of these. Simply because of the fact ive seen a performance of kurotsoke and i didnt like it it looke a bit fishy and as for equinox to me its to dear for that effect but i think it uses a lot of mechanical gagetry. Sorry i cant help you with your origanal question but thought id give you a few more ideas.

I meant more along the lines of "it's repeatable" or "it's not a force", etc.

From that link Zack posted, there's "no force" and it "resets immediately" "There's no palming" and "Everything can be examined" :)
