My credit card hates me ;)

Postby minibluedragon » Feb 26th, '07, 17:22

Hi folks!

Many many years ago (15 to be exact!) I had an interest in magic, spawned of many Saturday afternoons spent in Hamleys toyshop in London. At the time I couldn't afford to buy a lot of the tricks so most of my interest was from library books (this was pre-internet remember? hehe) and I learned a few basics but nothing astounding.

Recently I watched the "This n That card" trick on YouTube and managed to figure that it's a variation on Colour Monte but while looking into where I could buy the trick I came across a few others that successfully managed to dent my credit card at Davenports in Charing Cross.

What's even worse is that this "bug" I've caught for magic even has me pre-listing various illusions and tricks I'm interested in purchasing at some point as I'm pretty sure my little cousins will love em (and they're great for family meals etc)

One trick on my list is a Rainbow Deck, however I'd like to know if it's a repeatable trick for the same or similar audience? There's no point in paying out for tricks taht I can only even perform one time because the next time I try, the same card is chosen as last time etc

Secondly along with my current line-up of:-

Checker Chip
Coin Through Rubber
Burglar Ball
Dotty Spots

And the possibility of Colour Monte, Rainbow Deck and maybe Rama Deck, any pointers on some nice tricks for a relative n00b to look into?

Any pointers greatly appreciated!

To be honest, you're much better off spending your money on a few good books than one off gimmicks. You'll get so much more for your money with the books. Mark Wilson's Complete Course will keep you going for a while, packed full of all kinds of different tricks from cards to stage illusions. Well worth the money.

yup bobo and Royal Road are brilliant.

It's also really worth looking at any of Karl Fulves Self Working works, there are some brilliant gems in those.

I'd recommend the PenaCoin or whatever it's called. It's a square sheet of rubber that you put over a glass and can make non-gimmicked coins 'melt' through the rubber leaving no hole. It cost around a fiver, is easy to perform and is literally draw-dropping.

When you leave Davenports, go to the National Portrait gallery and walk up towards Centre Point. As you walk up you'll see a number of stalls, one sells magic. Buy a Vanishing pen, it's under a tenner, easy to perform and looks amazing.

Don't forget to buy a TT.

You can probably get all 3 for under £20.

an alternative to the checker chip is the colour changing chips, also available at davenports. At around £18 they are well made and really suckers the specs in to believing they know exactly how the magic is happening and then delivers 4 twists in quick succession at the end.
One of my favorite "gimmick" tricks to perform. With good patter, this is good for young and old alike.

not a fan of sigs, so I won't bother adding o..... oh

I used to have loads of square sheets of rubber and never used them for the coin penetration trick, even though I knew it c/o of an old Paul Daniels book. Long perished now. The rubber, not Mr D. You can get them for free from certain places, as long as you don't mind them flavoured.

I suspect that was 'Adult Magic' and it's still available in many places!

That Penacoin is a good wee trick- not to dear but still gets great reactions from people. Its even funnier to watch people afterwards trying to work it how it works.

The hard part is the set up in front of people but its a very clean trick afterwards

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Thanks again guys. The coin through rubber I already have which is actually really good (although I have to say I was sceptical of the reaction I'd get) - Still can't make up my mind if I prefer to let the audience watch the coin melt through or just pop through but I'll have a think.
