Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Hmm, okay, this is a beautiful effect, and one I've been working on in front of a mirror for a good few hours. I've got all the phases except phase 2 working basically - although they obviously need practice and smoothing out.

A couple of things I noticed from messing around with it, that didn't seem to be mentioned on the DVD:

1) After phase 1, you can move the linked ring relatively slowly up and down the band to show it linked, by simply turning your right hand (or whichever is holding the ring) to point slightly inwards toward the body. You obviously need to be a bit careful about which direction you move the ring though.

2) A possible additional convincer (not that one's needed really, but could be an alternative), if you move the hand with the band forward, and pull the ring towards you, and slightly out to the side, you can clearly show the ring linked, and pulling the band against the fingers. Difficult to explain clearly, easy to do. It may help that I'm using a fairly wide band ring, that shows it off well.

Now with phase 2, where the ring is linked on one band, and then moves to be linked on two, I can't seem to get the move right, and where he puts his index finger through the bit to transfer the thingy, when I do it, I get the correct topology (ie. the strands of the band are both passing through the ring), but there's a kind of upside down twist around the ring which needs to be sort of shaken out - meaning I can't do it cleanly.

I must have watched the DVD a dozen times, and a few in slow motion, but I can't quite see the maneuvers of his fingers exactlym as his hand gets in the way. Am I being thick, or has anyone else had this problem, and can offer any tips (without giving too much away) or PM ?

There's clearly little chance of a spectator working out the method when performed well, if I can't work it out even from the instructions

Thanks,
Steve

Russ is a very nice guy and I'm sure he'd be happy to help you if you contact him. He posted here a few times ( http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/sutra6550.ph ... ight=#6550 ) and his contact details might still be the same - his website is http://www.magicbuzz.net/

Thanks, I'll try to get in contact with him if I can't figure it out the basic move over the next week or so.

It's probably me being thick, but I haven't come across any moves with bands before where I really coudn't figure them out at all. (Not being able to do them well is of course a different matter :) )

hehe, I'd very much like to be able to make this look half as good as he does 8)

Some of us from TM had the honour of seeing Russ perform this in his hotel room (at about 2am!) in Blackpool and even though he was totally knac, er, tired from a hard day's demoing, his handling was just superb. From as close as 2 feet away the illusion was perfect and was a joy to watch. Saying he's a very nice guy is actually somewhat of an understatement, he's a real gentleman and so helpful you wouldn't believe!

It's always good to hear when the people behind great magic are great people too.

I imagine seeing that performed live must have been a bit of an eye opener - it's incredibly deceptive.
