I totally agree

Just practice until you can do each sleight so naturally it looks like you're not doing anything at all. If you can fool yourself, I think that you're good enough with that sleight

For practising slights, especially double lifts, and more importantly HOLDING the double cards naturally, obivously - the only way is practise.

Once you have a reasonably good technique and are able to do it well - stand in front of the mirror. And perform the sleight. E.g. If you're practicing DLs, perform the DL. Hold it, transfer it. Then do the same, but really with only one card. And keep going until the sleight, and what you are pretending to do look exactly the same. And then - then you are ready to perform it.

The same applies to false counts, holding breaks and MANY others.

With reference to p***ming, p**ses, t*p ch**ges etc - a small amount of misdirection is required - you need to be able to make the sleight without looking at the deck, and continuing with your patter.

I try to make everything look like casual nothingness - pay no attention to the deck and everything the idiot it's attached to is saying.

AJ,

I think in fairness to your question I have to answer as has already been done, the best way to do a sleight depends on which one you are doing.

For example, there have been some comments on your querry regarding the DL and I would disagree with them all. I perform sleights as if they are a normal move. Therefore I could say to a speccy, 'Look at the top card' as I DL and they will all look at the sleight performed but not see it.

Other sleights require miss-direction to succeed.

Be more accurate and folks might be able to help.

When you practice the sleight...remember what you want it to "look" like. If you are practicing a shuttle pass, then actually place the coin in the other hand, to get the feel of what it looks and feels like. Then go back and forth between really moving the coin and shuttle passing it until they look identical. With coins and passes, it's great to do the "which hand is it in" routine while practicing, because it's not really magic, just a little betcha. And you can do it for friends, family, just to get the practice and not worry about them burning you. If they see you shuttle pass, it doesn't matter. Just keep practicing until the real thing and the sleight look the same.
