Putting out the burn

Postby HarlequinBlack » Mar 6th, '07, 11:11

How do you deal with the person who's got your hands on house arrest?
Just got back into cardmagic this year. Went to a poker game, wasn't playing, so I decided to entertain some friends. One was a girl and her boyfriend. At first he was blown away and happy to see someone pull some tricks off. After the two card monte, he began burning my hands. I could watch his eyes calculate every twitch and motion of my hands. Now I've been away for a while, and I'm not confidant with all my sleights but i know the basics of misdirection, "where you look, they look"...but of course i could've looked all over the room and his eyes were not leaving my hand but something kicked in and i just stared at his eyes. Only him, the whole time. I stalled as much as i could with jibberish and as soon as he looked up and saw me staring at him, it was like a deer in headlights. sweeeet relief.
i mean i could have easily said, "you thought you saw something" when he called me on the sleight, but...i dunno
So has anyone else used this method or is there some better way I could handle these in the future? (improve my sleights)
(i got caught gliding, come on...thats bad)

to be honest I have never been caught on the glide, that's one thing I have got right.
Try one or two completely "hands off" effects, such as spectators card trick from rrtcm or anything else where sleights are not an issue. It will take the emphasis away from what you are doing.
And as you were, keep talking to them and looking straight at them.
With certain things if they are burning you badly there's nothing you can do about it, just adapt the best you can.
Even looking over peoples sholders has worked for me in the past but it won't work every time in all situations.

It just comes from the old chestnut really, practise practise and when you're done a wee bit more practise. There's no substitute for experience.
Keep at it!

I think its all about conditioning minds.
Lets say I want to lay down the two aces, only what I realy want is one ace and an indifferent card. Turn over the first ace as you would a D/L.. lay that down.. if they want to check at this point they can, though you obviously dont ask.

There minds are conditioned to the way you turn over cards, now do the d/l.. and lay the 'second ace' on the table..

Same with the glide.. the first card HAS TO / SHOULD be legit.. then you wont get caught out on the sleight

Couple this with misdirection with the eyes.. and patter topped off with a casual relaxed manner, then he shouldnt feel the need to be burning your hands!!

I think alot of this can come down to your presentation. Try chatting to them about something unrelated to to trick. Get them into converstion and you'll pull their eyes away from your hand.

Act calm and natural is the best way

persistence of vision works well with the glide.
That is to say, flash the pack face up and begin to drag the finger across the bottom card as you turn the pack face down

Have been as vague as possible, please edit if necessary mods

I have two friends who are like that and they do my bap in. They're always looking for something irregular to point out and make an eejit of me. I try to use as much misdirection as I can. I sometimes like to have a card on a table and ask them to look at it or even twist it 90 degrees. This can give me a few seconds to perform a difficult sleight.

I have to say though if there's one thing that really annoys me is when a spec lies and says a different card to the one they picked up :x

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

remember that when someone is concentrating that hard on your hands, it's dead easy to do something they're not expecting. Pop a card behind your ear or in your mouth for example.

Who needs misdirection when they're only paying attention to one thing.

carry a small toffee hammer with you...a swift crack across the head will sort them right out...

just ask a forthright question and maintain eye contact...you could even say to the person "...and dont you agree?" as if you asked them an important question (but didnt) - they'll look up confused and say "eh" thats when you make yer move(s)...

plus, its all about people management, if youre quite commanding in the first place "you two, stand here for me please..." and just point as you say it...

you're the performer, tell them where to stand/sit so they get the best view...remember, this is your arena, your domain, command it eloquently and in a forthright but friendly manner...

yeah, i like the hammer idea
SMACK!
what the hell was that?
"Is this your card?"
Yeah, but what the $*$# man? My head!"

Yeah, the glide, that was soo....ugh...never been caught on something so simple. The rest of my little routine went fine, I think I"ll be more prepared next time.
But it felt great entertaining again, so the effects were simple and cheesy, but they were still blown away. Mwhahaha!
1, 2, 3, 4....4 aces AH AH AH!
heard a new response last night too,

"are you like, mathematical or something?" (dont you mean mathemagical?)

thanks for the help
