Card Trick in Smokin' Aces

Postby GenGen » Mar 10th, '07, 01:12

Okay...after watching Smokin' Aces the other day, I couldn't help but grab my Ace of Spades from my deck of cards and attempt to do the trick Buddy does while addressing Sir Ivy near the ending of the film, when he is saying that Ivy isn't as important as he is, then grabs an ace of spades from his hand, and makes it float while spinning in between his two hands saying "What do you see right now? You see exactly and only what I choose to show you. That is illusion Ivy that is the lie that I tell your eyes.". I think I know how it's done, but I would like to know what it's called and exactly how to do it. This is my explanation of how to do it: 1. Any card will work, doesn't have to be a special card. 2. Have a little saliva or sweat on your thumb. 3. Spin the card before revealing it and try to hide your thumb so that it does not appear to be behind the card, then simply move your free hand around the card.

I managed to capture some of the footage from the movie.....here it is on my YouTube:

So......does anyone know? Thanks!

Yes, we know. No we won't tell you.

You might be able to find out how it's done in the sinbin.

Okay, blatantly asking how a trick is done is an easy way to get banned, I'm sure. Very unmagician like...

And by the way, you're way off on how it's done.

Why the hell would it get me banned.....everywhere else I asked this same question, nobody else seemed to know so I came to a magician website. And if you apparently know how to do it, why can't you tell me the name of the trick at least?

Why can't you at least tell me the name of the trick. I don't care about how it's done, I just want to know the name so everytime I attempt to show my friends, I don't have to explain the whole thing as in the first post.

I said that before expecting to get an answer with a name and how to do it, but instead I got a negative comment. So then I changed my approach and expected just the name, and get yet another negative response.

Can someone, anyone, tell me what it's called?

Are you a magician? Into magic at all.....as a hobbyist maybe? Please go to the intro's and follow along as everyone else has done....and by the way, reading the rules will help!

Card spin was one of my first searches on Google....but there must be so many tricks out there with the words "card spin" in it that it's kinda hard to determine which one is which.

It isn't actually a trick, it would fall more under the realm of card manipulation or card flourishes.....the effect itself is quite pretty, but remember....you are watching it on televison......it wouldn't stand up as much of a trick in real life!

Remember, he had to actually learn every trick he does in the movie. I've been able to do this so far at a slight angle, but not with my thumb (which you can see he is clearly using as he pulls his thumb off the back of the card towards the end of the trick). I just wish there was a certain name for it like "Floating Card XZXZX" or something because when I search Google for anything that has "Card" or "spin", it hits me in the face with trillions of hits.

Get some c.a or c.l off spinsnstuff.com..

you need some b.e to secure the card.. get this off ebay..

then grab a b.b or a p.b depending on your hand size.. £3 from bbforu's

then you all set. there is a little prep and you need to conceal the p.b but that should be easy if you have a t.k spool.

thats about it, its relatively simple

As you've been a bit more civil and literate than many other people who come along asking for stuff, I think you deserve to know why you're getting the 'runaround'.

First, the other people didn't know, because they aren't magicians.

Second, magicians (the good ones) won't tell you, because part of the 'Magicians' Code' is not to tell people the secrets. They will share with other magicians, but your first interraction was to ask for information about a move. It's very different from someone who's been contributing here for months wanting to know the name of an effect.

Third, if someone unknown to a group of magicians comes along asking for the precise name of the move, or trick, or principle, a lot of the time, they are merely secret hunters who are a bit smarter than the usual. Some magicians are so keen to help that they forget that the question is often posed so that the asker can go and Google the name and hope to learn the secret that way.

Why can't you at least tell me the name of the trick. I don't care about how it's done, I just want to know the name so everytime I attempt to show my friends, I don't have to explain the whole thing as in the first post.

"This is a card spin". *You spin the card.* Done.

The move name means nothing to anyone but magicians. And Googlers.
