A collection of my magic

Postby warmerclimate » Mar 8th, '07, 21:30

Hey there.

I know I'm actually very new here. I have, however lurked for a while, and I'm now actively participating.

I recently made a video for part of a school project, displaying a wide range of magic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9P0VlaDGaEc

In all honesty, none of it is particularly advanced, but I wanted to use short, snappy and in your face moves.

In retrospect, I feel I have definitely used too many gaffs. But then again, it was created for laymen to be amazed at the impossible, and I hope that it serves that purpose.

I'd really appreciate any positive or negative feedback on my video.

Many, many thanks,

- WarmerClimate.

Looked good, but the use of black cards made some of the effects hard to see.
Stick to red/black

Yeah. Someone mentioned that to me when I showed it to them earlier as well.

Having said that, it's only two of the effects - but it's certainly worth reviewing.

Thanks.

Nice work. Keep working on your ECC - there's no need to "push" the cards up that much. Doing so is suspicious.

As for too many gaffs - that's just a matter of opinion. If the effect works and your spectators are entertained - you've done your job!

About the ECC... I know it was God awful.

Unfortunately, it was due to a number of factors: the angle at which I had to perform for the video being the main one, my body and arms were a bit twisted.

Thanks for the comment.

The gaff point is a fair one - but when performing on the go and table hopping - a large amount of gaffs is impractical!

Thanks again.

Actually, a deck completely made up of gaffs is a very cool thing to have for a table hopping situation. Tons of effects all neatly packed in one little box - ready to go at any moment.

Nice! I would say to avoid the running commentary via text... let the magic speak for itself.

Purely for entertaintainment purposes you might want to add some music.

If it was up to me, it would have no text, and lots of patter.

Yup, I'm not keen on the text either. But unfortunately, due to nature of my course, I get marks for adding music (which isn't put on yet - I had problems with the production program) and titles, which must be consistant throughout. My teacher recommended that I didn't speak in it... As he's marking the coursework - I did as I was told!

Thanks for all your kind and constructive comments!

I am rather unexperienced in performing sleights (about as unexperienced as I am in posting on these boards...), but I do like to think I have an eye for sleights. I have not performed the vanishing/re-appearing ghost queen, but if you were using the sleight I think you were, perhaps you should not visibly nudge the card with your thumb before it changes...even if you are not doing what I am thinking, it seemed rather out of place. Perhaps obscure it with the top portion of the deck if it is necessary to the trick.

Having not performed the trick, I wish to be neither hypo- nor overly-critical, but it just seemed odd.

Other than that, I think it was extremely well done. I particularly enjoyed the matrix at the end. Very professional. 5/5.
