Derren Brown's stage routine--impression pad?

Postby RobLaughter » Mar 18th, '07, 18:32

In Derren's stage routine, he performs an effect where he has a spectator write down the surname of the first person they had a crush on, then put the pads (assuming they're impression pads) off to the side. He then "reads" her mind and divines the name. From what I can see, he never has a look at them again, and I've watched the video time and time again.

Does anyone have an idea on how he might glimpse the pad? I hope this isn't teetering into "exposure" territory.

there's a few ways of doing such a trick, depending on how much money you have to spend, and how much time you have to do the trick, and how good your film editting staff is

i notice a pad for this kind of thing going for about £2000 a bit, the madness

I'm pretty sure it was Nyman's "Pro-Folio". It certainly makes sense, anyway.

Considering Nyman and Brown work together on his live shows (and probably a whole lot more besides) I imagine Cardza is right - do you reckon he paid Nyman for it though? At full retail price?

I think payment was an Olivier Award!

Thanks for the input, guys. It does indeed appear to be the Pro Folio based upon the pics I've seen of the pad and what I've seen Derren use on stage.

I've got an impression pad I made myself (for about 50p) but I can't just get an instant glimpse of the pad. I'll probably find a way to incorporate this into a similar routine, but it won't be nearly as clear as Brown's.
