Had my first gig friday

Postby Carl Buck » Mar 26th, '07, 10:07

Morning all!

I had my first paid gig on friday night, 2 hours working a local pub/restaurant. I have to admit I was shaking like a good one before I started, but within a couple of minutes and after I'd got into my routine adrenalin kicked in and it all went well.

I had one stumble when perfoming NFW at the first table due to the shaky hands, but it was one of those where I know it wasn't right but the specs couldn't see it, so got away with it ( split second glimpse of a face up card but was covered by my fingers to the specs)

Best reaction of the night? NFW and Bang On, which i finished with on each table! ACR went down as well as ever, as did hopping coins, sponge balls and a quick elastic band routine.

The reason I've posted in support and tips.. what are peoples preferred method of a top card glimpse? I have always used a fan glimpse, but it just seemed on friday because I was doing it 4 or 5 times that it may ring alarm bells if you do it too much? Any suggestions?

I already knew that in the restaurant there is a fruit basket, and know that it doesn't get touched until desserts etc at the end of the evening, so at my last table I finished off with the note in a lemon, which I asked the waitress to cut when it was time to reveal! That went down a storm and earned me a couple of free pints!

All in all a top evening.. :D

Congratulaions. A paid gig! Thats something to dream of for me still.

Did you use the Mark Wilson bill to lemon?

Thanks!

Yes that's what I used, with the note vanishing from the sealed envelope! Excellent reaction although I had one eye on the fruit bowl all night!! :D

I have been meaning to try this one. Could you PM me what you used to "fix" the thing back?

As far as a top card glimpse, I just peek the bottom card, f***e sh****e, and/or d****e un*****t it to the top. You can peek at the bottom card easily in the act of squaring the deck.

was thinking of that rob, it is one of the easiest methods.

can also be done by beveling the deck as you roll hands forwards to demonstrate what you want spec to do. not sure if thats clear what with trying to be careful of exposure.

Please edit if not careful enough mods.

You can always get it second from the top, turn the top card over, and dl....you will show them the card (with apparent back facing you) and ask them "this isn't yours is it?" they say no, but in the process you get to see theirs.....

If that doesn't make sense then pm me....

my usual method is to control the card to the bottom, get a glimpse of it there and then control it back to the top again. All looks very nice and natural as if you're innocently shuffling the deck.

If you want to control a particular card, you can fan/ribbon spread on an offbeat between effects and note where the card is. Pick them up so that the card is either on top or on the bottom--whatever your preference is.

Thanks for the tips guys. The control of the bottom card method will probably be the way I go, as I use that at the minute in my card routine leading up to ambitious card.

All I wanted to do was avoid anything being done to the deck once it's been shuffled by the spec, but the fan glimpse, I think, may be too obvious if I'm doing it on more than one occasion!

Well done mate

For top glimpse... either riffle the deck and peek the top card. ( just make sure you peek before the riffle gets to the top and let the last few cards fall as one )

Or my preferred method.. just spread through the cards.. take out 2 cards that you will 'use for later' and glimpse the top card. Hand the 2 cards to a spec and later do somthing simple like 'waving the aces' or Danny Garcias 'White or Wheat' from project volume 2
