A collection of information for all newbies to magic.

Postby lindz » Apr 3rd, '07, 18:13

Right I thought I'd make this thread for all the newbies who want to know what to buy and some information on getting started.

Cards:

1. Bicycle red/blue backs

Most gaffed cards come in bicycle so they are a favorite among magicians worldwide. Nice to handle too.

2. Tally-ho

These come in a variety of colours and some magicians prefer to use these because they claim they are alot smoother to handle than bicycles

3. Bee

These are also made by the same company as bicycle so are nice to handle aswell.

Books:

1. Royal road to card magic

This is a brilliant book on card sleights and card tricks. The book covers each sleight in turn and each sleight is covered by a trick that uses the previously learned sleight

2.Bobos Modern coin magic

This book is written in the same format as royal road by learning a sleight then a trick but this book is all about coins.

3.Mark Wilsons complete course in magic

This is another excellent book but this covers a bit of everything like rope magic, card magic, coin magic among other things.

4. Corindas 13 steps to mentalism

This is a book for the beginner of mind reading and mentalism and it covers things like billets, swami, muscle reading amongst other things

5.Karl Fulves self working books

I cant really write a description on these because there are about 13 books in total and they all cover a different area of magic but they are an excellent source for the begginer

DVDS:

Royal road to card magic

This is the same as the above described book of the same name but it's in dvd format rather than in a book.

Modern coin magic

I think this is a 5 dvd set and I think it covers all of the work in bobos above mentioned book but again this is a dvd format.

Daryls encyclopedia of card sleights

There are about 7 dvds in total and they cover every card sleight you could think of so again excellent if you are getting into learning sleights

Gimmicks and props:

This is only my personal opinion but I'm sure alot of people will agree with me

TT

This is an excellent gimmick that has been around for ages but it is still used worldwide amongst many magicians and this is one of the most versatile gimmicks in magic. This gimmick allows you to vanish and reappear things amongst alot of other stuff.

Right people Ive run out of time so I'm going to finish it tommorow. Let me know what you think and if it will be useful to TM. I would like to know of more stuff that can be added e.g main catorgories or extra items in books/dvd whatever and how to improve any of the already written ones. I will be adding links and prices and thinking about doing a rating out of 5 from what other tmers think of each item. I thought instead of telling newbies what to get we could direct them to here if we can get a good list together in each catorgory. So what do you think and help would be appreciated.

Lindz I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right thread here as this might be more for the intermediate, if so this can be deleted. But I was thinking that it might be nice to have a recommended list of material.

Say like a list of books/DVD's that have been approved and listed by TM. There might be some material that has been released over the last 5 years that is great but is overshadowed/forgotten about with all the new releases coming out. Hopefully that could give someone a list of where to start looking. Rather than buying something as useful as a solar power torch.

It could maybe added as an extra to the list that your compiling now. I find that when I look on websites there are hundreds of titles so it can be hard to differentiate between good and bad releases. Just an idea thats all.

Can anybody please help me? I'm having terrible problems controlling my streetmagic- I can't walk down a street without turning into a pub.

Where to Begin?

Postby BILL BERMAN » Apr 16th, '07, 02:31

No harm intended but the sage advice of KISS certainly applies here.

The starting point for a magician is THE TRICK BRAIN by Fitzkee.

If you want to be a mentalist it is CORINDA's 13 STEPS.
