Greetings from Buffalo

Postby Jimmy Ace » Apr 15th, '07, 05:01

Hi!
My names Jimmy and I've been doing magic for almost a year. I live in Buffalo, New York. I've learned mostly from books, and just recently started purchasing a DVD or two.

I got started in magic after seeing a re-run of David Blaine's "Street Magic". I was so intrigued I went online to find out how his stuff was done at some poorly made exposure site. I was very disappointed to say the least. First off, the vast majority of his tricks could be bought from any magic shop or website and took very little skill. None of them were his! Secondly, there was nothing really new about what he was doing, except for the fact that he was outside. Big flipping deal.
This turned me off of magic for some time.
My interest was sparked again when I was hospitalized in March of 2006 for quite some time. Being immobilized in bed all day gets extremely boring (it's pretty sad when the highlight of your day becomes Oprah). I had a deck of cards and to pass the time I taught myself to spring the cards from one hand to another (I still don't know if this is what magicians call it) and a basic DL (incorrectly). When I showed my dad, he ordered me Robert Giobbi's "Card College" as a surprise. I was hooked.
In the following months I purchased the rest of the series, and have made it up to somewhere in Volume 3. I have been able to tackle most of what I've read (none of it mastered except for the very basics), with the exception of the Pass. I just can't get that up to speed (literally, I'm not fast enough).
I've found just reading this forum to be massively helpful. I'm glad that I was introduced with books, and not some overpriced ellusionist DVD pandering to naive, lazy, beginners. I hope I can be a positive contributing member to this forum and learn some more on the way.
I do have just one question (which the search function could not adequately answer). What is CUPS?

Thanks

Jimmy Ace

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!

Hi and welcome to TM

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Welcome to TM!

Actually what Blaine did was more signficiant than just doing them outside - he turned the camera round and made it about his audiences' reaction to the magic.

Even if Zenon did beat him to it by about ten years or so (if I'm not mistaken) :D.

Hey there Jimmy,

I'm another from the U.S. here. Welcome.

Re: Mr. Blaine
I don't really care for DB's style of magic but the one thing i can say for him is, even though he may have used other's tricks (and actually, most of us use someone else's illusions, unless they were the creators) it is the way he made the illusion/performance his own. For whatever reason, being lucky timing (the public was ready to see this style on tv and sparked the demand for more), right place-right time (getting the connection with a tv producer, etc. to create the shows) or just the word of mouth because he created a fresh take on magic, he became a stand-out. I give him credit for that. I just wish he had a personality :D .

I agree with stevo4, you can take the oldest trick in the book, but with the correct performance, you will be remembered for that trick and it will 'become' yours... That's what DB did, well done is all i can say. We're here and he's there :o)

Welcome.....I am from Canada - Western Canada - but have been to Buffalo and Niagra region, quite enjoyed it. I found Buffalo to be a very interesting city with a very unique culture.......do you follow hockey? Your Sabres had quite a season!
