Hi!
My names Jimmy and I've been doing magic for almost a year. I live in Buffalo, New York. I've learned mostly from books, and just recently started purchasing a DVD or two.
I got started in magic after seeing a re-run of David Blaine's "Street Magic". I was so intrigued I went online to find out how his stuff was done at some poorly made exposure site. I was very disappointed to say the least. First off, the vast majority of his tricks could be bought from any magic shop or website and took very little skill. None of them were his! Secondly, there was nothing really new about what he was doing, except for the fact that he was outside. Big flipping deal.
This turned me off of magic for some time.
My interest was sparked again when I was hospitalized in March of 2006 for quite some time. Being immobilized in bed all day gets extremely boring (it's pretty sad when the highlight of your day becomes Oprah). I had a deck of cards and to pass the time I taught myself to spring the cards from one hand to another (I still don't know if this is what magicians call it) and a basic DL (incorrectly). When I showed my dad, he ordered me Robert Giobbi's "Card College" as a surprise. I was hooked.
In the following months I purchased the rest of the series, and have made it up to somewhere in Volume 3. I have been able to tackle most of what I've read (none of it mastered except for the very basics), with the exception of the Pass. I just can't get that up to speed (literally, I'm not fast enough).
I've found just reading this forum to be massively helpful. I'm glad that I was introduced with books, and not some overpriced ellusionist DVD pandering to naive, lazy, beginners. I hope I can be a positive contributing member to this forum and learn some more on the way.
I do have just one question (which the search function could not adequately answer). What is CUPS?
Thanks
