Why "The Dove's Head"?

Postby monker59 » Apr 16th, '07, 17:12

Anyone here know why this section is called "The Dove's Head"? It seems a tad morbid and doesn't really seem to fit. Maybe a moderator or administrator could answer this question. Until they do, I put it to you, the people of the forum, why this odd name?

if you could suggest a better one i imagine there could be some kind of vote held. if anyone else felt the same that is. as it stands, I'm quite happy with The Doves Head
out of curiosity do would you avoid a pub called The Queens Head or The Kings Arms or something similar?

I assume it's because doves are traditionally associated with magic and The Doves Head sounds like a pub where magicians would unwind and chat.
Am I close?

What sort of names do they give pubs in America?

Here we always have pubs like the Lions Head or Dukes Head or something similar, The Doves Head just sounds like an ordinary pub name to us Brits.

I went to a brewery pub in Minnetonka once. I can't remember the name - or getting home - but I do remember being back at the apartment we were renting, jumping up and down on the couch and ringing England, where it happened to be 6am on a Sunday morning.

Pub names differ greatly from the UK in North America. The traditional "pubs" as you know them are referred to as "Irish Pubs" as Lawrence mentionned. A few of the many Montreal "Irish pubs" include: Hurley's, McKibbon's, The Old Dublin, O'Regan's (no animal body parts)...

These establishments differ greatly from all other alcohol-serving establishments, which can be grouped into "resto-bars" (modern, bistro-like bars offering sandwiches, trendy coffee, local beer, and more refined alcohol and liqueurs and, trendy "night clubs" (with loud dance music), and just plain "bars".

I have to admit, Montreal is a great city for drinking.... there's really something for everyone.

In case anyone in the UK is interested. The American show "Cheers" is actually based on a real bar in Boston.

On another note, does anybody think we should try and get this forum renamed (especially for members who aren't allowed in pubs)? Maybe we could think of a more inclusive title for this forum. If you guys think we should change it, maybe we should post some ideas for what it should be called instead.

When you're old enough to have a favourite pub, you'll understand why what you're asking is blasphemy, like playing a kazoo during the quiet movement of a war requiem.

I get the whole "pub loyalty" thing. But what about this, the forum is supposed to be about anything non-magical, so then why does it have a magic inspired name? Just curious. Sometimes I like to pick at things and take them to a literal meaning. It was just a suggestion, anyway.

certainly has a magical ring to to.

we could call it "Blaine's Head", but it wouldn't be much of a pub anymore, that'd be a different kind of place
