PK rings: On the fence

Postby monker59 » Apr 18th, '07, 04:42

Lately I've been thinking of buying a PK ring. I know they're expensive but I've been saving up. I've seen descriptions of them on several sights and I understand their basic workings. However, I still don't understand exactly what tricks I can do. If those of you who do have PK rings could post a description of the effects you do, that would really help me make up my mind. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR EXPLAINATIONS. I just want something along the lines of "I present a card to a spec. Then I shuffle it into the deck and reveal their card to be on the top of the deck". I've heard that you can do a coin through glass trick with the PK ring but that's about all I know. Also, the only PK rings I've seen for sale look like wedding bands. If I do buy a PK ring I don't want to look like I was part of a wedding that brought together two gang families to make peace. Are there any PK rings out there that are more (how do I say this?) teenager appropriate?

Where exactly have you been looking? How expensive have these rings been for you? Anywhere I've come across them, the most was $25. Perhaps you're looking in the wrong places?

You could find a few reviews if you try the search button. The generation 2 pk ring was reviewed by Tom Lauten just a few weeks ago. However, to help you out...

Possible effects:
Coin through glass
Coin vanishes
Coin transpositions

Chopless Chop Cup

Various pk effects (moving cutlery and that sort of thing)

Stop time on a spectator's watch.

Aesthetically speaking - you'll just have to get over it. It's a plain band - which is more common amongst men than any other style you may be thinking of. What exactly is "teenager appropriate"?

As for looking like a wedding ring - try NOT wearing it on your left ring finger? There's no law that says it has to be on that particular finger, and anywhere else just looks like a normal ring.

Also, if expense is a concern, be warned that as you're an American, the "sleightless" coin effects that the ring can be used for may not be performable as soon as you get it.

There's all sorts of different PK effects that you can do with them. I thin they're well worth the money, if they did one that was suitable for me to wear, I'd have got one ages ago.

Beware if you are allergic to cheap metals in any way.
They are poor quality in my opinion (the Wizard one) and rusts inside and the coating peels.
Good for effects, but if cheap metals irritate you then stay away!

If anyone here has a PK ring, could they please describe their experience with it? Is it a hassle or do you wear it all the time?

I'll humor you and post in this thread...

I had a G1 ring from Wizard that I wore pretty religously each day. I found it amazingly useful. With absolutely no preparation except for the necessary gimmicking, I could make a pen skitter across a table, move silverware, stop someone's watch, or do a chop cup routine. Using a shimmed pen, I also developed a "floating ring" routine that could pretty much be done anywhere, anytime. It was pretty much a miracle device wrapped up in some shiny metallic packaging.

One day, though, I was walking along and my hand bumped a steel door frame; crack. It was still perfectly usable, as the crack was just a hairline fracture, but I knew it wouldn't last a whole lot longer. I resolved to take better care of it.

Even with the crack, it lasted a couple more months. I never had a problem with rusting or peeling coating until the crack, then only the crack itself began to rust. One day, I let a friend of mine check it out--big mistake. Within five seconds, he dropped it, and I was left with two little sticky bits of metal.

The company that makes the rings offers a replacement policy with pretty reasonable prices (about $10 USD incl. shipping). All they ask is that you return the ring to them and they'll send you a new one.

I haven't gotten around to sending it back yet, but I plan to in the near future and they're letting me swap for a G2 as well, which looks much more natural than the G1 ring did and is supposedly a little stronger.

Hope this helps,
Rob

Hey,

I wear mine all the time. The only problem is handling credit cards, and typing on laptops etc. I dont know what you mean expensive, they are usually about 10 pounds, and even if we are getting back onto the subject of value of trick, you would be hard pressed to find a normal ring for that price.

About it being teenager friendly, I'm 15, and I feel happy wearing it, as long as its silver, because the gold ones look alot like wedding bands, which seem slightly suspicious on the finger of a teenager, which is what i presume you are.

Just another note, if anyone questions you on the subject of it, say that it was a present from your <insert dead relative here>, they usually feel slightly bad about bringing it up and shut up.

All the best,
Croz
