Which Deck and Which Book??

Postby Puppeteer » Apr 21st, '07, 22:02

hey everyone,

i have been into magic for 4 or so years on and off and I feel its time for me to make a larger commitment and step it up. I want to do "street magic" mostly, magic I can do almost anywhere and at anytime.

Type Of Deck

I normally, probably like a lot of you fellow street magicians, use the normal red/blue bicycle decks. However, I really do like the look of the Black Tiger Bicycle Deck however I do have a few questions. Is it common for people to question if the deck is a trick deck? and do they handel/look as good as everyone says they are?

Book Series

Again, I am very interested in doing magic on the go and some basic illusions that can amaze. I was very interested in the 3 book set The Art of Astonishment by Paul Harris. I am unsure if this series will help me, but from the reviews i believe it will. Keep in mind i do know basic slights and counts with cards.

cheers,

I've never had anyone question the Black Tigers, they just comment that they're "nice looking cards".
Can't comment on the Paul Harris books as I don;t have them - yet! - but there are some good effects in Harry Lorayne's Apocalypse books (I only have the first one but I understand the other three are just as good)

Effects that are "impromptu" is probably what you are looking for as apposed to "street magic" which essentially means performing to people randomly on the streets :!:

Type of deck

You probably wont find this happens. However the great thing about (regular) black tiger decks ect, is that if someone wants to inspect them they can! better to get this out of the way at the start though. rather than halfway through your first effect when it may not be appropriate

book series

Athough i dont own them I have heard alot of good things about the Art of Astonishment series you can find a good thhread about them here

Are you mainly looking for card magic, or are you interested in other areas aswell?

Thanks Guys!

I am interested in other forms of magic. I really like card magic, but i am also open to coin magic and more specifically small illusions and vanishes.

I do own the raven and I find this a very handy tool.

Im pretty sure i made a mistake, i am not interested in impromptu magic I am interested in any magic i can show to people on the street. By this i mean nothing that really involves tables to present on and such things of that nature.

thanks you guys!

Is your sole intention to go upto people on the street who you dont know and show them magic, this is street magic.

"Close up" magic is the term used to describe magic effects that are perfomed for small groups of people, I.e in a bar or your co-workers or friends ect. The prefered "tools of the trade" are cards and coins and lots of other every day items. Often the effects are presented spontaniously as to apprear there was no planning involved and therefore "impromptu" (although a great deal of set up and certainly practice was involved).

Have a good look around at past threads on the forum and I'm sure you can find lots of suggestions to help you along :)

thanks for your help you guys, i really appreciate it. Final question on this topic I promise :)

Is there really that much a difference in decks? I mean the only deck i really like the look of besides the normal bicycle is The Masters Deck by E.

Mind you, for the price of three of those i can get 12 normal decks. should i just stick with regular decks? is there really that much of a difference? i think it may in fact arouse less suspicion.

cheers everyone, i look forward to reading :)

The only differences I found between a normal pack of bikes were a nifty (yet gaudy) ace of spades and a whole lot of hype. They handled no differently for me, so I just concluded that I'd wasted my money and threw them in a drawer with all of the other extra cards I have laying around.

I can highly recommend the Art of Astonishment books, by the way. I absolutely love them, far more than most of the books I've read.

Ciao,
Rob

If you want to expand your effect knowledge, you should definitely get Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. It has all different kinds of effects from cards to rope to money magic.

The tiger deck is really cool, especially if you will be working in places with blacklights... You can give the cards to spectators to check, but I have never had any questions about them...

One thing I have found with the Black Tigers is, after prolonged use, the black ink comes off on your hands leaving white faded bits around the edges of the cards. The black ink/dye also stains the white interior of the box too, so although they are great to handle and look superb, this detracts from them slightly.

Regarding books.

I find that you can own the best books in the market but If you can't practice/perform before you get distracted by the next trend then you haven't fully acquired the potential of the book.

One can get a cheap novelty kids book. Practice/Perform and adapt it to your style with some creative handling. You can be doing a 21 card trick that might fool people who know the 21 card trick.

I suggest you join a magic society and see as much magic as you can. It's very important to have a very positive attitude about it as well. If you can meet some friends that are into magic as much as you are. You'll definitely support each other and grow.

If you get Black Tigers, then get the ones with red pips. The Tigers with white pips for all suits are just too confusing for the spectators (and the magician :) )

Hey,

I don't know if its what you're interested in, but Jay Sankeys: Anytime Anywhere, is full of impromptu stuff, and I found it really good help, when moving into the realms of street magic.

Re the deck, The BlackTigers, they are excellent cards as long as you can afford several packs, because after a bit of wear and tear the white of the original card starts to show through. They just look a mess after a while.

All the best,
Croz
